Octane alone will not have much, if any, effect on MPG. You would notice more of a difference in performance and/or knocking of the engine.
You paid $4.15/gal in NJ? Boy are the goudging!! I paid $3.79 for my last fill in PA where we generally pay much more than NJ. |

2315, we understand what you were talking about and your concern about the 3MPG. Pay no attention to remarks like that from the "saint". You were nice to respond but that remark does not even deserve recognition, or a response in my world. Just keep talking about cars, thats what we do here! I return to this website to gain knowledge and to find out about strange things that might happen to the type of cars we enjoy so much. No matter how big or how small, just keep the information coming! We all read it, log it, perhaps use it, when something doesn't seem right. Thanks.

Your post blows me away. My reply to the OP refers to the loss of life, homes, business, etc in your country; your countrymen.....not mine. Pretty much lost for words. |

seems very odd that someone would be filling your tank for you in the first place? is this just an east coast thing? ive been pretty much all over the country with exception to the east coast and never once have seen a full service station still active.
maybe go buy some fuel additive for improved octane and call it a day? not sure what to help with here sorry

But my issue is that the pump at the BP that I filled up at. The pump only has one nozzle and 3 buttons. One for Reg. One for Plus. The last for Prem. I saw the attendant push the button for Prem. My receipt indicates they charged me for Prem. God only knows what the hell was in the tank of the Prem... Last edited by Ghetto2315; 11-17-2012 at 01:37 PM.. |

Just a thought but i heard because of the whole hurricane situation gas was not mixed with the usual 10% ethanol that it usually gets. This could probably be a reason why your tank emptied quicker.

Octane will have absolutely no effect on mpg when drive non-aggressively or aggressively for that matter. Minor effects yes but not an average of 3 gallons. A couple things though
GIven its low bottom end torque, if you are driving it too slowly to get up to speed, it actually uses more gas than if you have a semi-aggressive departure from a standstill to speed. It takes more work to get to speed in the lower gears at lower rpms. Second, given the big storm, I would pull your air filter and see if it is clogged or dirty. That is one thing that really can knock 3 mpg off easily. Last, sure, there is bad tanks and quality, but its not the octane but rather the gas itself may be bad which is possible given all the shortages etc. |

If you don't see the contrast, I can't help you.
On the one hand, you insult the OP by using the term 'bust your nuts' and then disparagingly dismiss his 'premium sports coupe. Then you feign ignorance of the implications of your post and can't understand why you were insulting. All the while ignoring the whole point of the OP's question, which was explained in the first post, and again by the OP in post #19. And you don't get this. I see. Good luck in the online community.

Doesn't sound like an octane problem but, an Ethenol problem. Octane won't affect your mileage much however, Ethenol will. Ethenol has a much lower energy rating, meaning it takes more to make the same power.

All gas, save a few stations in a handful of states uses 10 percent ethanol so this is not an ethanol problem
