What's next?
Well, sometime soon European mags should get cars to submit to more thorough tests. Followed, sometime later by the US mags turn. That will give us a little more than the "impressions" and limited data collected so far.

In case you guys aren't following the ordering/tracking page, someone just returned from SC BMW driving school and says his instructor told him base M3 will be priced at $62k.

That would be a 26.7% increase. Can't be true.

European and other markets have experienced a similar hike in the M3 price, so why shouldn't the US market? And the car mags have raised their estimates in the past couple of months; they must have heard something... I am not saying it makes a whole lot of sense, but I think it is entirely possible. |

Here's hoping for no gas guzzler tax. Need some relief to fit all the options in under $70k.

The instructor claims he's seen documents although he wasn't willing to provide them--not a matter of his opinion. Unless he is simply lying, which I guess is possible, this might be pretty solid...

Customers in Europe will not receive cars until after Frankfurt motor show (sept 15th) which is the official launch. So in about 4 weeks we should get customer impressions. Hopefully we will get MDCT 3/08 confirmation at the show. North America production should start 12/07 so allocations/options/pricing should be in Sept/Oct.

If US base is $62 (and I think it could be higher), you have to add tax, title, registration, AND gas guzzler (no WAY this M3 will not have this tax) BEFORE you start throwing in options. Realistic option list: 19" wheels, EDC, MDrive (which I think forces you to take I-Drive), M-DCT, Stereo - That's over 10 grand in BMW options. Next thing you know, 2008 M3 - $74,000 US. Thanks for shopping.

You know what, and I have no reason at this point to doubt what Lucid is saying, mags are saying similar things. If 62 k is base, add a stiff gaz guzzler tax and the M3 will be overpriced. IMO, if any kind of objectivity is used in regards to performance per dollar, at that price, the bloated M3 would be considered highway robbery and I would have to be an idiot to buy it over a 335 for a GT type car. You are looking at well over 70k for an M3 nicely optioned, out the door. Remember this is a 3 series not a 5 or 6 series. You can get a sports package equipped Euro delivery 335 for well north of 20 k less, or smarter yet, a 135 for even better performance, less weight and less money. How about a Cayman S that will destroy a bloated M3 in all aspects of efficient driving dynamics and it actually comes equipped with real track brakes that won't fade after a lap or two. I bet the lowly 135 multi piston brakes fade less than the M3. It just goes to show you that BMW intended the M3 for GT touring only and the 135 for real track use. With the M3, BMW simply made the decision to build a cheaper version of the 6 series. Now days the M division is all about selling cars and making money I thought that was suppose to be BMW's job not the mighty M. Looks like for M, the only bastion left for motor sport is the CSL and if history is a guide it won't even be offered in the states.

I have stated a number of times the Cayman S is underpowered and over priced. However, IMO, it is Porsches best pure handling car which places it in the top tier of handling cars in the world, at any price. Waiting for DFI and the facelift before making a decision. Porsche usually doesn't do much of a price hike with facelifts but who knows. Not sure if your question is sarcastic, so I will answer it as if it wasn't. You can get the current Cayman S for about the same money before discount as projected figures of the M3. It all comes down to what car you want. GT with gobs of intoxicating power or a feather weight ultra handling sports car.
