Strange Misfire Issue!! P2316, P2319?
2012 BMW e92 M3... just hit 40k miles
I've searched the forums and seen some info but with no direct solutions... December - So I'll start by saying these issues started back in December 2018 when randomly the car started idling harsh and misfiring. It would run terrible then after sitting overnight would run fine. When it would start acting up the whole car would shake and I could barely move it. I found after stopping and restarting it a few times it would run fine! I could go drive the piss out of it and beat on her like nothing was wrong for a day or two, then the following day it would run like dog sh*t. Very intermittent. This went on for about a week. I chalked it up to possibly being bad gas, cleared the codes, it began to run fine for the next few months. Codes = 1) P2316 - Ignition Coil Control "F" Primary Control Circuit High 2) P2319 - Ignition Coil Control "G" Primary Control Circuit High Mid February - So the same problem started again, but this time it won't go away. This time it will run terrible for a week straight, then one day be completely fine, then back to misfiring. So after pulling codes I get the same P2316, P2319. So I spring for two new coils from the dealer and replace them on cylinder 6 & 7 hoping this will be a quick fix, unfortunately no change. Went ahead and decided I'll trying putting some new plugs in since im sure it had the original ones, think it could only help... nothing! Same symptoms and same codes, P2316, P2319 . Actually seems to be running worse and having more good days then bad. March - Since i don't have a ton of time to wrench on the car, I took it to my local Indy shop to have them take a look and see if they could diagnose these issues. They have no idea what's going on and think its very strange for a car with low miles to be having these issues. Told me it may be bad gas and to put some Techron in the tank (not very helpful). I'm starting to lean towards fuel injectors after talking to a few people and some research. May pull em out and have them rebuilt and flow tested, or just replace CYL 6 & 7 with new to see if that will help. I just find it so strange that a car one day can barely drive 2 miles without sputtering out then the next run like a raped ape, then that same day barely keep an idle. Trying to keep it out of the dealer, but that's the last straw if I must. Has anyone had this issue??? Any help is appreciated!! Last edited by SoFloM3_detz; 03-26-2019 at 08:03 PM.. |

I would switch the coils plugs and injectors from cyl 6 and 7 to cyl 2 and 3, clear faults, and see what returns. If it comes back on cyl 6 and 7 again, it has to be a wiring or connection issue there, a faulty ground somewhere, or a faulty DME. Are you getting these faults with stock software? How did the plugs look on those cylinders when they were pulled?

Yes, Running stock engine software. The plugs were not terrible, but could use replacing. I was a little surprised with the amount of engine oil that was on them... but have read that is sometimes normal with these engines. I may give that a shot, switching the the coils and injectors to 2 & 3. Curious to see the outcome.

So I finally switched the ignition coils and fuel injectors from cylinders 6 & 7 to cylinders 2 & 3. Cleared codes then fired her up....... no change. Same rough idle, limp mode and same codes, P2316, P2319.
All i'm left with thinking is that has to be some sort of electrical problem, starting to become a nightmare! Can anyone chime in with any other possible ideas?? |
