OEM vs aftermarket windshield replacement
I got a crack on the front windshield which may be too big to repair and I've been quoted $250 for an aftermarket and $350 for OEM. The installer said they're the same thing only made somewhere else (China most likely). Is there any reason why I should spend the extra $100 on the OEM?

I've never bought the sales pitch that they're the same. I would go OEM whenever possible.

I got quoted for 750 for aftermarket and 1300 for OEM. But its for my X5. I went and got the aftermarket....guess what? the rain sensor on the windshield peeled off half way so I ended up getting another windshiled replaced with OEM this time...

Always oem if possible and the price difference is too small to not get oem. Also important is who does your install

The only problem I have had with aftermarket windshields is they tend to seem softer and pit easier. I just get them replaced every 2 or 3 years through insurance at no cost to me. Makes it worth it in my opinion. I have never noticed a difference in clarity or fit on my cars.

How do you get your windshield replaced through insurance? I'd love to do that. My OEM Windshield is pitted as hell, so I dont buy aftermarket being softer. |

Most policies have glass insurance. You can decline it but it adds so little to the cost it is totally worth it. There is supposed to be a crack in the line of sight to get it replaced but pitting works too.

Definitely checking my policy today!! I got a crack (not line of sight) but have some pitting as well. I suppose the line of sight thing could be arranged if need be since the windshield's already f'd

I have to check my policy. So If I claim there is too much pitting to see 100% clearly they may replace it? That would make my day. |

I have never had a problem. They never check it and the safelite guy comes and just replaces it. Does it right at work or at home. Super easy.
