Out of pocket oil change

So my local BMW dealer is charging me $200 for an out of pocket oil change at 5000 miles. I've never paid out of pocket for this car but this sounds kinda steep.

Anyone else who has had an out of pocket oil change at the dealer - how much did you pay? And is it worth it to take it to Goodyear or some non-dealer place?

Kobe,

Is that what Passport wants? Or Sterling?

Sterling. I called there since they are only about 5 miles from me.... I didn't try Passport yet. $200 sounds like a rip-off though even for a BMW dealer

I believe I saw posts here stating anywhere upwards of $90-$150. Yep, $200 is a rip off for an oil change

Please let me know what you find out. I am interested in doing an oil change either at 5k or 7.5k

$200 is insane - thats like getting an oil change in Germany where Oil is sold for about 20 Euro (25USD) a quart. DIY or jiffy with you own purchased oil.

Anyone know if not using 'BMW Oil' is bad? I heard once the dealer can tell and will void your warranty if you use others...thoughts?

It certainly sounds as though they want to intentional deter anyone from doing an oil service early @ that price. My local BMW Center charges around $75.00

Not true - burden of proof is on them to show you did the damage. You should, however, follow BMW recommendations. Easy to buy the BMW oil from parts department if that is a concern. Others suggest Mobil 1 or Castroil. I think I'll buy BMW oil and filter and take it to a friend's shop who will do it for $15-$20.

kobe: well since its just an oil change, what about buying the oil and filter yourself and getting an independent BMW shop to do the oil change. Be sure to have the DIY (found on e90post) handy...might work out better

Magmd on Bimerfest posted the following:

I had my first oil change done at 10K @ BMW of San Diego. Here is the breakdown for everyone to make comparisons.

Filter : $12.08
Synthetic oil: $4.05/quart x 7 ($34.65)
Labor $25.43
Waste fee: $1.43
Tax: $3.43

Total: $77.22 --- 45 minutes for oil change and free car wash

So, yes, you're getting ripped off. At Concord BMW (CA) I was quoted about $150, or $50 if I bring the oil and filter. That means the oil and filter "cost" $100. I bought the oil and filter at the parts department (cost me less than $50) and walked it over to service, saving $50 in the process. Dealer service departments are profit centers and act accordingly at the expense of the customer.

Passport quoted me $95.

Sterling cleared it up. They said oil service is $225. An oil change is $130 - still high in seeing posts on these boards.

I think I'll buy the oil and the filter and take it to an independent.

Thanks all.

guys and gals, don't forget, the minute you walk into the service area, there should be a posted sign with the labor rate $90-95/hr depending on dealer. A basic oil change should be 1/2 hr in my opinion. That calculates to $45 for labor and if you buy the oil at the dealer, it is $4 a quarts (time 7) + $13 for filter. Add all that up give you roughly $96 (don't forget taxes)...If I live close to you, I would change your oil for $45 (edit: my labor charge )

According to the service guy:

Oil change = new oil, new filter
Oil service = new oil, new filter, something about checking brakes, and microfilters and topping off fluids.

The service is apparently what they do for free at the 15K. I didn't ask too many details since I didn't want to pay $225.

I don't have an SA at Passport because I haven't taken my car in for service anywhere yet. Jim was my CA - and he's selling houses now...

hahahah..yeah. For $77....I will keep going to BMW SD to get it done. If I DIY...what, I would save just over $25 or so....blah. I don't want the hassle to buy oil/filter and disposal.

Wow $200 and I thought I paid a lot $145 at Concord BMW in N. CA.

We typically pay more here in CA, but $200 is ridiculous.
