Engine oil low already?

I've had my M3 for slightly less than a year, it has around 5000 miles and the oil level says its at minimum already.

Does this sound right? I don't drive it hard at all, and I had the 1200 mile service done about 2 months after I took delivery.

People have commented that the S65 seems to burn oil. I wouldn't be too concerned unless it's taking quarts daily.

The S65 is pretty much a race engine. So stop driving like ms. daisy and redline the shit out of it seat the rings and your oil consumption will definitely go down.

Anyway I have since searched deep through the forums and found out that a lot of people seem to be burning oil quickly overall and especially in the first few thousand miles. Thanks for the help guys.

Cheers to that! I drive the shit out of my M3 and the oil consumption isn't bad at all. Give it a little after a track day and my car continues to run like a champ.

Two quarts added in about 13K miles. The car is driven like a raped ape at times and sees triple digits on the Autobahn fairly frequently.....

First of all, are you sure level was FULL after the service??? Search how to measure oil level properly (it's not when you're moving). To monitor consumption, make sure level is full after a service and go from there. I'd buy a quart and top it off myself (you can search for that too), but many feel they're dealing with rocket science and are afraid to do it. You can also have dealer do it if you don't mind the hassle.

Second of all, that consumption is not abnormal at that early mileage, so don't worry about it. But my guess is your level wasn't full after the service. Good luck.

The oil loss is due to the engine weaping for the open road.

All in all this sounds pretty good. You should get a free oil change at the one year mark regardless of mileage anyway. I wouldn't be concerned if I were you.

I noticed that when I picked my M up brand new that its in the middle the oil with 100 miles on it.

It says oil ok and its dead center. But when my boy does bmw oil changes at his shop (m6,m5, 3s, 5s, 7s, etc; ) all customer cars he fills to max cause by the time they come back 6-12k later they burn a quart or so ..

should I be concerned that they only filled it to middle?

Not sure if it's the norm, but the car burns more oil as the mileage increases.

For the oil change at ~15K, the oil level indicator was at the half way mark. For ~30K, needed to add a quart about a week before the scheduled change. And now at 50K, just needed to add a quart with 7K remaining until the next scheduled change.

Driving habits have remained the same. Some spirited driving with the car seeing redline, but overall a ton of highway driving.

Exclamation

I've had the same issue twice, the 1st time it happened the car said add a quart but the iDrive indicated that oil level is "OK", when I took it in I was told that oil level was normal. This week I got the message that "oil level is at a minimum but the iDrive is saying oil level is "OK". I'll keep you posted once I take it in for a recheck.

The S65 consumes oil at a faster (than typical) rate, especially if you tend to keep it in the higher rev ranges ..
