I think I found a new hobby!

Hey guys finally made it on to the track for the first time and boy was it a great time!

I went to a NASA event at Buttonwillow (counterclockwise) and I had a blast! Let me just add that the NASA experience is great for beginners/complete noobs because of the attitude of safety first. I was very relieved by this atmosphere and there werent too many asshats there. There were only a couple incidents of dangerous passing which were quickly reprimanded. Overall I felt very safe during the event and totally recommend their events for those just starting if you cant make a CCA event.

The first day I was lucky enough to get a national champion driver as an instructor who drilled the proper line in while going slow. This track was very technical with a ton of late apex turns so it took me awhile to get it since Im not too familiar with how to drive a rear-wheel drive (or any car for that matter) car fast. (M3 is my first FR layout car) Second day the next instructor built on that and helped me push the car. Let me just say I fell in love with my car all over again!

I was able to have a great final run where I put it all together and was very happy with my progress. Got a ton of compliments on my progress from my instructor as he said typically most ppl dont advance so quickly when they are complete track noobs, I think I can credit Forza for getting at least concepts in my brain which I was able to put to action once I got comfortable. Who says videogames are completely useless!! In the end I was sad it was over already and all want to do is go out again!!

I cant wait till the spring for more trackdays!!

hahaha.. yeah thats a full roll on there! I was being overly protective thinking it was rocky out there but its mostly dust being spit up.. Got a bunch of weird looks during the day as well.. but meh I didnt care, they dont have to deal with a black car. I will prolly do it again unless I get a clearbra which is starting to make more and more sense now.

It looks like you missed a bit.

I have started running 'raw'. It just feels more...natural!

Glad you had fun... and what is cool... it gets better. I have also just bought shares in 3M too! Is that insider trading? LOL

The funny thing is that you missed the areas that get abraded on my car which are behind the tires and the rocker panel moulding in front of the rear tiresMy front valance is due to be repainted thanks to pylon hits at the apex of corners when organizers try to keep us from cutting apexs

yeah you know I noticed that after I got home. I had some areas where there was noticeable pocking by small stones on the rocker panel and behind the wheel well... gonna have to remember those next time

Also there was a guy in a brand new camaro that was cutting through the esses with rather large curbs and his side airbags went off, Im assuming the car thought he is about to roll!!

Sounds like you have caught the bug!

Please let me know where you buy your tape - I am going to buy that store....sounds like a pretty sound investment!

Congrats, but save yourself the trouble and repeated expense and get a front end car bra. They're only about $150 shipped.
Then use clear contact shelving paper on the mirrors and behind the wheels. It's much faster and cheaper.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I saw another M there with the bra you speak of (Colgan?) but since I have a lip I dont think it will work. Do you think it will be fine still?? It was the main reason I brought up the clearbra in the original post but of course I didnt elaborate till now. Thanks for the tip on the shelving paper will look into next time.

Either way I would hate to ruin a surething investment in 3M.

Don't sniff the other guy's exhaust pipe, as driving very close to another novice in front of you is dangerous (you have no idea how he'll react in an emergency).

Stay farther behind, build momentum and work your line so when you come out onto the passing zone you're already going faster than him and are positioned to overtake.

Bottom line - loose the tape.

Is your new hobby about applying tape? That looks time consuming ;-)

Glad you had a good time. But if you are that worried about your paint, maybe tracking the M3 is not the best choice.

I think a 6" tape buffer will help soften the impact!

Try some roadwrap. Good for track days and doesn't show on photos if put on correctly.

And get a part time job, cause track days get expensive.

+1. prepared to have your bank acct. drained. I too just started this year (used to track bikes) and it just doesnt stop w/ the track. I've now gone mod crazy (bot dinan stg 3 the day i got back from first track day) and could easily see this turning into a lifelong, bankrupting, marriage-ending pursuit. Jetpack through a sky course? It begins
