I put the key on a floating keychain (the kind you use for boat keys) and attach that through one of the loops on my trunks. I have done this countless times with no ill effect. The key is fine in the washing machine too FYI.

Doesn't your wetsuit have a waterproof pocket(?) Most all wetsuits have them.

Otherwise use a combination style car key safe and hang it off under the car frame, etc.. That's the easiest and best way, imho. (you can stash wallets, credit cards, etc. in there too.) And just wear a Road ID bracelet in case you ram your face into the ocean floor.

I pull the key out of the fob, leave the fob in the trunk, lock the car with the key and then put the key in the pocket in my wet suit. The little key pocket in my wet suit (as well as past wet suits) is definitely not water proof.

This works for cars with comfort access as well, because once you pull the key out of the fob the car doesn't detected the key in the car anymore. If you leave the fob with the key in it in the car and try to lock it the car will unlock itself automatically when it detects the key/fob in the car.

Nope. The metal key has no electronics in it. The car detects the fob, not the metal key.

If you have CA and you leave the fob in the trunk and close it, it will re-open the trunk if it does not sense another fob outside. Yes, I have tested it without the metal key in the fob.

I have not tested to see if the DOORS will unlock themselves without another fob outside, but that scenario is hard to come by in the real world. Usually you would use the CA ridges on the handle to lock, and the ridges dont work if the fob is not outside of the car with you. Or press the lock button on the fob, which obviously requires the fob to be in your possession.

Or you can just taste the battery out of the fob.

...and why would one do that?

You can have the fob in the cabin and lock it with the metal key and it will stay locked.

I am talking about cars with CA. Since it is impossible to lock the key inside the car while it is still detectable by the car.

I'm pretty sure it's possible. I just haven't tested it yet.

You can buy a magnetic box that you stick on your frame under your car and then keep the key to that in your wetsuit. My friend has one that he keeps his spare in just in case he loses his main key.

I assumed that the fob can detect whether the key is in the fob or not. If it can't then it looks like by locking the car with the key it disables the fob, because my car stays locked with the fob in the trunk. I checked this before purchasing a car with CA to make sure I could leave the fob in the car when surfing. I've done this several times and the car always remains locked.
