Flier impersonated U.S. solider to win airline upgrade

This guy is a true douche bag.

Police arrested a Long Island man this past Friday on charges that he impersonated a U.S. solider. His alleged goal: Snaring an upgrade on an American Airlines flight to New York JFK.

The New York Post, which broke the story, writes:

Rock Diaz, 22, of Freeport, has a history of pretending to be a military man to get VIP treatment, cops said -- he once even smooth-talked his way into a jetliner's cockpit, where he was photographed sitting at the controls wearing a goofy grin.

The mile-high huckster was finally brought to earth Friday afternoon when a sharp-eyed customs official at JFK asked him his rank -- and he gave an answer that didn't match the insignia on the uniform he was wearing.

The Post says Diaz's gaffes included the inability to produce a military ID and that his dog tags "were comically engraved with the words, 'U.S.A. Marines Corp.' "

For his part, Diaz insists he did nothing wrong, saying he simply accepted an unsolicited offer to move to first class. Diaz, a Spanish speaker, says he thinks the incident is related to a language-related misunderstanding.

He is now charged with second-degree impersonation.

Anyone who impersonates a US Miltary member and goes so far as to don the uniform should go to prison for a fair amount of time. And then when released, a long stretch of Community service related to helping Veterans somehow, without direct contact with them. He doesnt deserve to be in company of US Service Members.

Not that I believe his language barrier story, and they gave him perks without asking, but honestly there are plenty of people walking around in Military clothing and you can buy them at any Army Navy store and you can buy all the patches as well so it going to hard to say he was doing anything wrong since other people do similar things.

It's against the law to impersonate a military member. Wearing bits and pieces of military clothing, that's one thing, but to intentionally lead others to believe you're a service member is unlawful.
