Why not invest in a PC some pads, polishes, and sealants and give it a go yourself? I find it much more satisfying than paying someone. Could just be me.

No your not the only one. Modding, tinkering, cleaning and or detailing ones auto has always been an enthusiast's most favorite weekend pastime.

Is there a thread someone can point to that lays out an exhaustive list of all the highest recommended detail supplies? I've searched and it's all over the place ...

That's the thing, there is no "best." It's all about what you like. I'm a HUGE fan of Meguiar's #21 sealant as my LSP (last step product) because it goes on easily by hand or machine, womes off just as easy and looks AMAZING. For polishes I've been using Meguiar's, Menzerna, and Klasse and they're fine but I want something with a bit more working time so I'm going to try Optimum's line. I hear great things about their stuff.

Realistically, with nothing but the change to a machine like the Porter Cable 7424 and your current products you will see a MARKED improvement simply because the 7424 wil polish better, more consistantly, and you'll use less product. It also makes the process faster.

Autogeek and Autopia are great sites to get a lot of information just be aware, these guys are as fanatical about detailing as I am about electronics so it's VERY easy to get lost in some of the threads and jargon. Start with their noob forums and you'll be ok.

PC 7424s are slow but safe. If you want a machine that's a lot faster and more powerful, you should look at the Flex 3401. Can't use the slow PCs anymore...

I need one too. But I'd have to go to their location as it's not possible to do it in mine.
