Don't get caught up in the appreciating/depreciating asset thing. What matters is what this watch stands for in your mind, not what it is worth (unless you plan on divorcing and will hate looking at it), buy something within your determined range and that you like and you'll be ok. There are plenty of sub 5k Tags that are really nice IMO, IWC is awesome, maybe check out UBoat as well

Movado. Elegant, simple, and they don't have a bunch of clutter and gauges. I have the fiero, real nice watch.

That just looks busy as hell on the face. I know, it supposed to be an E6B, but come on! Who is really going to use it that way? Small, hard to read, and then add in cockpit vibrations and distractions, and no way are you using that thing as an E6B, except in an emergency.

And, I'd say if you have no idea what an E6B is, then maybe you don't need the Navitimer. (I'm sure YOU know what one is, based on your screen name...)

I've got a TAG, and I've been somewhat happy with it. After the $350 repair bill after 4 years of having it, I was less thrilled with it. But I do love the look of Carreras....

Hell Jay, you live in Arizona now, buy a machine gun!

Of course, you aren't going to get much of an MG for $5,000 these days....

Omega Seamaster FTW. It's in your price range and there are multiple models to choose from. I prefer the classic 300M with the blue dial. You could also get a planet ocean.

2 years ago I had a new ss Daytona black dial, I sold it immediately, 500,- euros above listprice.

I'm a Rolex guy. But only the sportsmodels(currently the Deepsea) , my father is a (mechanical) watchmaker for over 40 years now...

If I had the money I would go with a Jaeger LeCoultre watch- a master compressor or something like that. Those things are money though. There are a couple of models that can be had for around $5k. However, the automatic models that actually look good (IMO) run around $8k. Great watches but expensive as hell.

The other brand I would go for is Omega. I just think their watches look great- modern and classy at the same time. You could get a Planet Ocean which would go with pretty much anything you wear. The Seamaster 300M Chronometer is a great option too.

Yeah the black dial Daytonas are hard to come by.. therefore there is a decent amount of demand for them. Hence the ability to sell it for 500 over list.

I'm not a huge fan of Rolex's myself, but if I were to ever get one, the only one I'd wear is the DSSD. That is a nice looking piece and I dig the blue lume!

If you dont plan on selling it whats the difference?

Whatever watch you buy, it should be treated as a depreciating asset.

If 5k is your limit, then you can skip the Tags altogether as they're not worth it. You can also skip buying a new Rolex, as due to the fact that Rolex ADs aren't allowed to discount, you're not going to find many models that will run you under 5k after taxes (or even before for that matter).

Here's a price list from 2007, they've gone up again several times since then:

http://www.rolexforums.com/archive/i...p/t-26280.html

Here are a few companies worth looking at:

Omega
Breitling
Bell & Ross
Panerai
Baume et Mercier

This might be worth familiarizing yourself with if you're new to watches.

sorry chief you might wanna get your facts straight. Authorized Rolex dealers CAN and WILL discount NEW rolex watches. I have never paid sticker price on a rolex.

I mean that the sticker price of the watch has gone up over $1,000 since i purchased it. Not that my particular watch has gone up that much. The model as a whole has increased in price.

Sorry, I should have said "discount steeply". You're not going to get 25-35% like you will with other brands.

My father is a big JLC fan, he owns 3 of them

A few years ago I had a Master Compressor chrono, great watch but I sold it for a new IWC Ingenieur...stupid me.

As radix suggested, Panerai and B&R. IWC has some nice watches, too. That said, I'm not big into watches and have been carefully plotting a new watch purchase. I currently have a humble Seiko Sportura but they are pretty solid watches, it's sporty, and it's taken quite a beating and survived (except the chorno not resetting right....need to fix that).

In my mind, the only Tag that I've come across that I think is worth buying over ~3k-ish is the Grand Carrera. Beyond that, I think, is used Panerai (& others) territory.

The thing about Rolex is because it is one of the most 'replicated' brands everyone assumes its fake.

That is amazing. Most I've heard of are around 10-15% maximum, 20% would be exceptional, and over 20% is amazing.

the discount also depends on what the watch is made out of believe it or not. The gold and platinum ones get a bigger discount than stainless and they also increase in price more frequently and in larger increments generally. The 22% discount was on an all gold model the highest discount i heard of on a stainless was 18%

I've heard it also varies by model, but I have no data to corroborate that.
