Pulley question

Hi All,

This is my first post as I am a new member. Although I have been reading and following this forum for years and learned a lot from all the expert here. I have a question that's in the back of my mind and just wondering what's the opinion of all the experts here.

I have been looking at pulleys for a while and they all seem to only contain the crank pulley with the exception that RE has an extra pulley for the power steering pump in order to use the one sided belt. My question is does it make sense to make a bigger pulley for the power steering pump so that we can reuse the factory double sided belt?

The benefit I can see are:
- probably not much but in theory a little extra power from the pulley system as the power steering pump is under drive more
- reusing the factory belt for ease of sourcing the double sided belt in the future
- increase the weight of the steering (some might not like this) but I personally like heavier steering coming from cars with no power steering

The only real negative that I can think of is maybe this will have a bad long term effect on the power steering system as I don't know the internal working of the system. Any expert with techical knowledge of the power steering system care to share their opinion? Any vender wants to chime in? Doable idea, or totally stupid or this will destroy the power steering pump? Not enough space for a bigger pulley? Thoughts?

I am a newbie so please don't burn me if this is a stupid idea. Cheers.

I'm no expert on this but I will add one thing to your benefit list. Some of the aftermarket belts haven't been holding up so well. I think re-using the OEM belt will be more reliable.

As for the steering weight, I have yet to hear of anyone who would not like it heavier. I do like the M3 steering as it is but a little more weight wouldn't hurt.

Welcome to the forum. You have an E92 M3? If so, post pics.

Cheers.

Yes and as a new member you must post pics of your wife/girlfriend. It's customary.

And if you have neither and you mom or sister or both are hotties, then post pics of them

My E92 is on order and probably will take another month or two before I get to see her. I will be sure to post pics of it when I get it. The waiting sucks so that's why I am researching and lining up my mods in order to take the focus away from the track my order status page on bmwusa.com. I am sure many on here understands this feeling, hahaha.

Cheers.

Congrats on the order!

I see you're in Southern California. You should come out to Bimmerfest this year to see what "options" are out there for your M3!

As for modifications for this car, there are just way too many choices and directions that you can head with this car.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

I suppose there isn't much opinion or thoughts on the pulley question from any venders? I can't imagine it being hard to make another pulley but wonder how come this direction was not pursuited on the market? Not cost effective perhaps?

Any other options I have here, like perhaps a different power steering pulley from another BMW model would work for what I am looking for?

Cheers.

I remember on the E46 models, pulleys made a decent improvement but I'm not sure if owners are getting the same results for the newer models.

There are a few options out there for M3s from the likes of Active Autowerks, Rogue Engineering, and etc.

It's not needed on the e9x M3 due to the settings are adjustable by the driver using the iDrive screen.

The Rogue pulleys do come with a replacement P/S pulley (stocked sized) - this retains standard off-the-shelf belts for easy replacement when the time is due, rather than proprietary belts from only one source.

I guess the question I have is if the manufacturer (in this case Rogue), is already making a P/S pulley, why not make a bigger one? This way we can reuse the the OEM double sided belt and not have to worry about off-the-shelf belts or proprietary double sided belts from other sources (which some on this boards has reported failing).

Just wondering.

Cheers.

A larger pulley usually means increased weight, especially on the reciprocating end where it counts.

For the record, belt failure has only occurred on one other manufacturer's pulley kit, which can be found with a forum search.

Both companies are reputable, you'll be happy either way.
