Does anyone own every generation of M3?
Just curious. My E92 M3 is supposed to arrive next week. I still desperately want an E46 M3, I drove one with the competition package last summer and liked it much better than my 335. A friend picked up an E30 M3 recently and I was surprised by how fun it was to drive, I'm looking out for one but I want it to be in mint condition. I don't really know much about the E36 M3, or E36 cars in general, never really been a fan of the styling, but this got me thinking about how nice it would be to have a complete set of M3 coupes. If I do decide to start this little project it will probably take a couple of years to find good older models, wouldn't mind importing the E30 and E36 to get some of the more special versions. Does anyone on this forum own them all? Anything you can recommend to look out for?

I want to own all four....... One thing to keep in mind is if your one of those that believes the E46 M is rawer than the E92 then the E36 is even rawer and then the E30 is the peak of rawness... There is a huge gap in luxury, size, and especially weight between the E36 M and E46...however, there is not a huge gap in performance between the E46 M and the E36 M (Euro)... the final gens of the Euro E36 had something like 20 less HP than the E46 M but weighed about 300lbs less. On used E36's make sure the water pump has either been replaced with a metal impeller as the plastic versions dont last long. The subframe bushings will probably need replacing, if they havnt been already. Some other issues include the idle control valve ICV, rear strut mounts, and issues with the stick resting in 5th gear when cold(US version).

In high school a friend had a brand new E30 M3...... whats really sad is it couldn't beat my old school Chrysler Conquest Tsi (turbo 2.6L) in a drag race....granted my friend was a lousy driver....

With the E30 M3, in your area, look out for rust. I am looking for a track car, and checked one out in NH the other day. It looked great from the outside, ran OK, but was covered in rust underneath. Only 5400 made for NA. They will begin to gain in value in a few years if kept stock. A good one will run you ~$15k in the US.

I plan on turning my E30 into an E30 M3 clone at some point during its life. I would love to have a real E30 M3, though. Call me crazy, but I would rather have an E30 M3 + E92 M3 than E92 + E46 + E36 M3s. There just isn't a car out there that makes you feel more connected.

I have owned several e36 m3. I owned two e46 M3’s, and now own an e92.
I wish I had purchased an e30, but back in the late 80's early 90's I did not know any better and drove a 190e-16v. It was a neat car especially with first gear down and to the left. R was above first. Anyway, if I ever had the chance to pick up a white e30 M3 in great condition I would do it in a second. Good luck. |
