I know how I drove when I was a teenager. No way I would give my kid an M3. Big and slow is the best car for a teenager.

When I was in high school my friends had new 335 & M3, Stang Cobra, Lex SC430 & GS430, Trans-Am Ram Air, Prowler, Bentley and other very nice fast cars. Majority of the girls got a new 3 series or MB C class for their 16th birthday. On the other hand, there were kids with beaters, civics, golfs, jettas, 4runners, trucks and other non high end cars. The ones with non high ends cars seemed to wreck more because they tried to show their car were just as fast or handle as well as the nicer/faster cars! Alot of the ones with trucks & SUV's messed up their vehicles because they thought they were pro off roaders!

It doesn't matter how much the car costs or how much power the car has! If that's what the parent wants to get their kid, more power to them! like someone said earlier...a teen driving recklessly in a Geo metro is just as dangerous as being in a M3. The M3 will prob be safer in a crash than the Metro! When I have a kid one day I would have no problem giving them a M3 for their 16th birthday! I'd just install one of the live gps monitor systems and if he/she is being stupid I'll take the car back!

Experience driving makes a huge difference. Why do you think insurance rates go down significantly after you have been driving for 9 years? They have stats to back up their logic.

The problem is that MOST kids cannot be trusted with a car like an M3 and think they are better drivers than they actually are. You may be an exception but 95% of kids aren't you.

Look on YouTube. Alot of those people doing 0-60 in a 328 or 335 are mostly kids. Besides I would trust a girl with a m3 more than a boy. Why? Becuase if you give a girl a fast car they don't care...they will mostly drive the speed limit. On the other hand a guy? He WILL find the limits of the car. I did with my beater CRV when I was 16. But after a few years I bought a 328 and never passed 85 and I drive the posted speed limit and I never got a ticket or camera ticket and I'm 19.

It also depends on what is your daughter's "type." (I don't mean to be offensive or disrespectful) Is she quiet, flashy, popular, drama queen, etc? Because the quiet ones are less likely to speed. The others will get tickets out the ass.

In conclusion take her driving in it. Watch her face, hands and eyes if she gets that grin and twitching hands the answer is no. If she shows that scared face...she will never speed in it I guarantee you. Just by the face you can tell what people want/will day.

Whether you have the means or not, everyone should know and respect the value of what it takes to earn your keep. I am not saying that people with means should deprive their kids, but an M3 is a bit much. Even if you want to buy your kid a nice car with a bit of sportiness, how about something like a Nissan Sentra SE-R or a Honda Civic Si?

And just like this, the ones with the sports cars think they are pro race car drivers.

Can a Metro get from 0-60 in 4 seconds? Can a Metro get to 155mph? A teen in an M3 is more dangerous than one in a Metro, because the car is more capable. As for safety, a nice 328i probably has the same crash characteristics as an M3.

However, only you can decide as (you well know) if she is ready to drive your M3 and if your decision is yes you will have nothing to worry about. Girls are far more responsible and I think they know the limits.

PS. The part about the 15 year old ... well hope his parents know what they are doing. When I was 15 I had to ask permission to use my fathers bicycle ... then those were much different times.

Edit .... Looking back in time now ... I have to add one point and that is ... I always worried about the other kids her friends etc. Still then only the father can decide what to do for he knows his child (by then a teenager). It has been now some 15 years since I gave my daughter my 535is and apart from bumping the front spoiler several times all has been well. So I guess in my case I was lucky since the 535is was just one step below the M5 at the time.
Rolf,

An e28 535is is no e92 M3. 0-60 mph is about 7.5 secs in 535. C'mon, that's minivan territory. Not really even comparable to an e90 328.

Even an e28 M5 is in the 6's 0-60.

And no, I'm not planning on letting my son or daughter roll in an M anything. That's just a scary thought when I think of all the stuff I did in an 1990 Acura integra at 16.

No, it's not a certainty, but the statistics overwhelmingly point in that direction. Lack of driving experience + lack of maturity + multiple distractions are not a good combination.

Its not about how young or old they are. Its about earning the right, respect and money before they can own one due to their own hardwork.

If you simply hand them a car-they take it for granted and have much less respect for it. The moment you pay the monthly car payment, insurance and other expenses-you become infinitely more responsible.

I think the general consensus is that if you’re a teenager driving a $60K+ BMW M3, then, you probably have rich (or well-off) parent’s and\or you live at home with them. I'm not saying this is you...

Most parents may see that this doesn't give their child the value of money or other values (most cases, not necessarily yours)...

So, generally speaking, parents wouldn't buy their kid a $60k+ car, even if they could afford it....

Yes. And then I'd only let them drive it with me in the car after they earned the privilege. Professional driver training and street driving as approved by me and all other worldly requests I can think of would be required. Otherwise that thing would sit gleaming in the garage until the weekend and I'd drive it!

i second this. no way a 16 year old could handle this car properly especially a boy, or appreciate it either. as others have said when your that age you drive way above your ability as i did in a pile of crap pontiac. the first thing you do is go out and see how fast can i go, and often did double the speed limit in residential areas or more. not a good idea.

Hate to admit it, but I'm also the 1 of the few on this forum under the age of 20. My father bought me my M for my graduation and only would he have considered it because I've always worked my ass for everything, work, grades, etc, I'm extremely responsible and am more mature than anyone of my age. And he also kind of felt sorry for me because I have cancer, but that's not the point. I've been driving since I was 13 But it wasnt my first car. I started off with a used Chevy trailblazer SS then once he saw that I could handle that with no issues he considered the upgrade. I've grown up with performance cars being in our garage all the time so I've been taught growing up how to handle them. Cars are my passion and I take care of this one, or any for that matter, like its my child. I get crap for driving this car all the time, and it annoys the hell out of me but I know Its ridiculous and I look out of place but it's really no one else's problem. I know what I have and have not for one second taken it for granted. I just wish people were so easy to judge and insert their opinion in on thins, because if you really knew me, you wouldn't think it was so terrible.

And like someone else said on the forum that I agree with, it shouldn't be a first car, and only if the kid is really that mature and can handle it, then why not? You only live once.

us older drivers at least myself speak from experience something you cant do until you get some. me personally, i couldnt handle this car or value it properly if it was given to me at 16. there are for sure exceptions to the rules, and i applaud younger owners who actually care about this car as strongly as myself and are able to drive it with skill as well.
