How To Clean Burnt Exhaust Tips?

Hey guys, Ive got chrome exhaust tips and they look black because there burnt. I want to restore it to its shinny chrome look. Ive used a chrome cleaner and a microfiber towel, just rubbing at it and some of it comes out but its after going at it for some time and other spots it just doesn't come out. Anyone have any tips to clean it easily? And is there any way to keep it from getting burnt? Thanks guys!

Try using apc (all-purpose cleaner) and wheel brush--I used chemical guys grime reaper with good results. Then follow with the chrome cleaner and terry cloth towel. Clean often to keep from getting out of hand.

I went through the samething just last weekend. Woke up early on Sunday morning and drove to the nearest Carquest. Bought the Mothers metal polish and the tips were back to their first day condition. Good luck.

I use this mothers metal polish too. Good stuff- cheap and very effective. Better to use with terry cloth towel then microfiber though.

0000 steel wool and either some mothers or weenol. Gently on the steel wool is all you need, it's amazing.

Also, for inside of the tips I bought this thing called "Mothers Powerball". Works pretty good indeed.

OP,

Even though these photos can't really show what kind of difference it made, here are some before and after shots for you

Same process but most likely would have to use steel wool with some metal polish. I use chemical guys metal shine with great results

The before pics are what I'd already consider clean! I'm running full catless so mine is much more severe than that. It's so full of soot that I'm considering powdercoating the exhaust black.

I'm pretty sure that your tips are in a worst condition than mines were. But in the photos, they look much cleaner than they actually were before I polished them.

Before going through all that, spend ten bucks and 30 minutes of your time and see the results yourself. If it doesn't work it doesn't work, not the end of the world. But I'm pretty sure you will be happy with the results.
