New Performance Trunk Spoiler Installation

Hey Guys,

So I just bought the new version of CF Performance Trunk Spoiler and I wanted to go ahead and install it this weekend. I really don't want to make a mistake the first time (to avoid the mess of taking it apart and re-installing it). So I am wondering if you think the way I taped it (using 3M) is correct and will hold it tight.

many members will tell you the tape works great. I personally feel the glue way is the correct way. (beta link)

Mine is adhered with the double-sided tape, which I thought could be an issue with my use of the car (regularly taken beyond 150mph..legally that is). So far so good.

Thanks guys! I don't want a permanent one, so I think I will stick with 3M tape. Just wondering from the people who have the new version of the CF spoiler, any recommendation for the way to tape it? Is the way I taped the spoiler the correct way?

You definitely got more tape than needed which isn't a bad thing. The only thing I would recommend is not using so many cut pieces. You have to take them all off before setting it down. When you set it down to figure out where the perfect spot is, its already sticky.

If you use one long strip of double sided tape, you can just peel off one end and still mess around where you want to stick it, then peel off the rest while its sitting in place.

u should be fine with 3m tape, mine is been on for sometime with no issues. Make sure you clean the contact surface before sticking it on. GL

As others have stated use 1 continuous piece of tape, make sure no tape is seen once installed as dirt will find its way there.

dry fit the spoiler and mark on the trunk with blue tape where it should sit, pull the backing off and go for it with 2 people. Just land it in-between your blue tape marks and your done.

I would also cut the 3M tape to fit exactly. The thin edge should just have enough to cover what touches the car and no more!

I used betalink. Its easier to re position and it bonds strong. Just tape the spoiler down once you find the correct position, then wipe off all excess betalink with the included solvent. Mine came out perfect.

Thanks a lot guys for all the advices. Using blue tape is a really good idea. I will try to install it tomorrow and will post pictures of the final result.

Yep, saw this video and seems like a great way to do it right the first time. Once you remove the backing on one end, keep it sticking out so you can grasp it then place the spoiler down where you want it then slowly remove the backing while the spoiler is in place.

I'm not sure if 3M adhesion promoter is applicable here but I've read how some use this when using the double sided tape.

3M tape FTW....it aint going anywhere. The amount of 3M tape you have on there prob weighs more than the spoiler itself.

One tip, I did test mount it first and traced an outline of where it should be positioned using a whiteboard marker (yes you can remove it). Once I have everything in position, I then proceeded in lining up the spoiler with the traced outline slowly peeling away the backside working my way from left to right. Everything came out perfect.

The only issue I had when mounting my CF Performance spoiler with 3M tape is that the front edge piece didn't make contact very much with the trunk lid. I laid a second layer of tape over the back half of the front piece of tape to give it some elevation so it would make better contact with the trunk lid. It's been on for some time now and works like a charm.

+1 for beta link... OEM painted spoilers that come on the M3 use 3m tape for a reason and the larger CF Pro Spoiler uses beta link, BMW does it this way for a reason. not saying 3m won't work, Personally I would never use it.

Tape it up like this, heat it up with a blow dryer, and park it in the sun for a day and your good. Mine is so solid like this because the foam for the tape is completely compressed and it acts as if it was glued on with no wiggle.

I taped mine like the OP using 3M heavy duty outdoor tape and you'd literally have to break the spoiler to remove it. It's seen some time on the track at ~140 mph and it hasn't budged at all.

Using some heat when you install helps the initial bonding of the tape which is key.

If you want it to really stick use some 3m adhesion promoter on the area you want to stick to. You can find packets of them for sale on Amazon. I just installed my front lip and rear diffuser and prepped the surface with this stuff before putting on the tape. It does not feel like it is going anywhere.
