hopefully the engine is a little bit more powerful than BMW claim, hence 335i and M5 E60

The TQ number is awefully low isnt it? Lower than a 335 from the conversions you guys are giving me.

Anyway the post here claims that R&T claims the info is straight from BMW. OP makes some very nice analysis vs. RS4, 335i, E46 M3 and E60 M5 power plants as well.

420 bhp @ 8300 rpm
295 ft*lb (400 Nm) @ 3900 rpm
compression ratio: 12:1
redline: 8400 rpm
low torque number...

There was a similar discussion when the S85 V10 engine specs were released but we have seen the M5 / M6 performance.

Power is power... It is about delivering torque to the wheels and the M3 V8 engine has a flatter torque curve than the M5 V10....

The key to the M3 will be weight and a 7 speed close ratio gearbox.... A 7 speed gearbox would be best matched with this V8 M3 engine given its "low" torque and high revs....

See this thread....trying to kick off similar technical discussions

The engine, however, is rated at 309 kW, which is the same as the Audi RS4. Audi managed to certify that engine to both 420 PS (German) and 420 hp (US). We suspect BMW will do the same, because the M3's engine is nothing more than the latest bomb dropped in the German horsepower war, landing right on top of the RS4's pretty red V-8.

Good article. Had some good comparisons. From that article it doesn't appear the BMW "dropped" the ball.
