thanks for the responses m3post. i have given it much though and decided not to press charges. San Diego is quite a long drive for me since over 2.5 hours away and the possibilities of taking multiple days off will not be good for me at this point of my career. maybe if i was a bit older and more seniority i wouldn't mind. anyways the thought continues to go back and forth. as of right now i'm doing krav maga which has helped me a bunch. self defense, conditioning, and oddly enough a lot of confidence. i've only been to 5 classes but i can clearly replay most of that fight that night in my head and i FEEL that if it were to happen today i may have escaped without any cuts and bruises.

as for a CC, i live in CA and even if allowed i just don't see myself carrying one. maybe i would feel different if i lived in another state or grew up around it.

Oh speaking of being assaulted for food, two peanuts are walking in a dark alley, and one was a salted.

I think it varies by which county in California you live. I believe the sheriff decides. Where I live it is not too difficult for an average person to get one.

After the OP's experience I would think if the police won't protect him he has a good reason to get the permit and of course the training. Something to think about when it is time to vote for the who is going to be the local sheriff.

Sorry to hear OP. I spent four years down in SD for college and one thing I will never miss is the bar scene - seems like everyone wanted to get in a fight. I did spend most of my time in PB though, not Gaslamp.

obviously i didn't get any pizza. if you read the long version of the story it was my friends taquitos that were snatched out of his hands, i honestly don't know how the pizza ended up the ground. i must have just dropped it when they started swinging.

Wait a minute here, this fight was over taquitos? A fight over decent pizza or enchiladas, I can understand, but fighting over taquitos is just absurd. No Mexican street food is worth bruising one's knuckles over.

I think it's pretty hard to loose a 20 inch pizza pie. I bet you it was a ruse to fight over taquitos to get OP to drop his pizza. Then he comes back, and poof, pizza gone too! What a scam.

.
In the State of California, concealed weapons permits are issued by the sherriff of a county or the chief of a municipal PD.

I'm not going to disagree with your statemetn that it's not "too difficult for an average person to get one" where you live in N. CA but I will say that I am positive that is not the case in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernadino, Santa Clara or San Francisco counties. My math could well be wrong but I think those counties make up the overwhelming majority of Californians (by population).

Legally carrying a concealed weapon in the State of CA isn't a viable option for the majority of the state's populus unless you're: (1) already a LEO or (2)can prove that your safety is more endangered than the rest of the populus. The second item disqualifies most of us.

Is there a martial arts discipline that allows one to defend himself but not drop his pizza? Seems to me that there's an untapped market here

In the 'difficult' states like NY and apparently CA now too, the easiest way to get one is to go through your business (or open one if you don't already have one ) -- From there the process becomes much easier because you can prove 'necessity' pretty easily, whether or not its 100% warranted. NY is notoriously difficult for CWP, and yet the owner of the tiny local deli in the suburb where I grew up got his whole family CWPs through his business. No real 'legitimate' need for it, not in a bad neighborhood (quite the opposite), etc.. but yet the business was enough to secure the permit. Just my $0.02

Thankfully I'm in one of the last free states in this country, and as such we can still buy firearms with a 3-day waiting period (0 with CWP), and get a CWP in about a month with a $75 class and $70 application fee. Blue states suck...
