This past summer i had a 2012 335i vert as a loaner while my car was in the shop and every morning when i would start it it sounded very similar to the videos i have just watched with the M3 being cold started. Very nice sound indeed!!!

I have had more than one curious Mustang enthusiast come over and talk to me about the M3 due to cold-start cycle.
"That's a BMW.. but that sounds like a muscle car.. What you got in there??" |

It's grumpy, raspy, and burbles in all the right ways. Contrary to it's small displacement for a V8, the S65 makes some fantastic sounds. The car roars to life and then settles into a somewhat gruff idle that's sure to get the attention of any gearhead. I've actually gotten many comments from non car enthusiasts about how much they like the sound of the car. On the other end of the spectrum, you gotta love the noises above 7k rpm as well. At this point your hands are holding onto the steering wheel and your ears are starting to make you wonder if you're going to see engine parts fly out of your hood. All the while there's a part of your brain flashing "OMG you still have over 1k rpm to go, WTF".

You gotta find one you can listen to. I'm really not trying to make you feel bad it's just that the noises are just not in the same league. To me the 335i sounds like what noises it does make is done through clever exhaust engineering and a team of guys sat down to try to make it as sound as good as it could. The M3 to me sounds like they said "we just need to prevent drone and it'll be perfect".

OP- it's very noisy. The noises you have to worry about are the ones that don't have a distinct mechanical pattern. If it's a random and not consistent sound, then worry.

Idle, running, and in gears - the cars are completely different in tone. I owned a 335i and a M3, so I agree with that there's a very distinct difference. Videos cannot give you the right impression IMO. I tried judging an exhaust I bought from a video and it sounded a lot better when installed.

It rarely gets cold where I live, but fortunately I still get the cold start symphony every morning. Sounds boss as hell.

+1 when that happens I just restart the car and it will bless me with that old school "cammed" V8 music. The cold start is in character with this car. If you like it quiet - we can show you a nice N20 328i

Option 1: Disable cold start and miss one of the best parts of the M3
OPtion 2: Let everyone within a mile radius know that I'm taking the M3 for a ride. I've got the OEM exhaust mod, so cold start is double the fun. I went with option 2. Because race car

To the OP, there are two elements of the cold start experience that you may be referring to. The first is that when started cold, the engine idles at a higher RPM (around 1100) for roughly 30 seconds. And the second is that for roughly 60 seconds after starting the engine, there's a metallic layer to the exhaust note. It's more easily noticed with the windows down and you'll definitely notice if you're idling when it goes away because the transition to a quiet smooth-running sound is abrupt. And for those first 30 seconds where you have the metallic sound AND a fast idle, you've got a pretty loud car. And it's awesome.

And at what point did i say i didn't like the sound of the car? I was actually asking about the ENGINE sound and it turned into a cold start exhaust thread! I was just inquiring on what type of sound the ENGINE makes when its started cold, not the exhaust. I do appreciate everyone's comments and i for one never complained about it or said it was too loud or that i didn't think it was for me. I want to know what to listen for or expect when i hear the ENGINE for the first time while shopping for a car.

Love the cold start sound. A couple of buddies heard it for the first time and said "Wow - is that stock?!?"
Cheers

It sounds very mechanical in the morning, I was always in the car when warming up the engine, but recently I walked around during warmup, the engine gets very quit and the tone of the exhaust gets VERY smooth in about a minute. even this idling exhaust note was quite a pleasing sound to listen.
