i think it's wrong to respond with a smart ass reply, regardless of the offer
so if he had offered 30K you would have cursed him out ??
what if he had offered 15K?
what would you have done then?
Why don't you give me $15,000 or $150? Sooner or later I will receive $150 from someone, why not you? Do you think I am a smart ass because my statement is similar to yours and I am replying to your post.

I guess when it's your money and your time, you may feel differently. Low balling is part of this used car business however there are limitations when low balling. People should always see the car in person and ask if the price is negotiable first before putting up an offer. Asking for the VIN is usually after viewing the car. I would of counter the lowballer $70K, so he knows to move on.

You could've just declined, no? It's just an offer. I had my house listed and some of the offers were ridiculous, but you can just choose to ignore, no? Just my $.02. Sounded a bit rude, even if you felt he was naive.

there's not much more i can add here, but it never hurts to be polite. even if the seller felt offended, he could have politely declined or not answered the offer. years back when i was selling my 911, a guy came in person to look at the car, test drove it, liked it. then said he was hoping the car wasn't in as good shape so he could give me a lowball offer of (then he gave his offer). I politely declined it, and that was that.

I think both parties showed a lack of maturity but this whole thing could have been avoided if the OP didn't respond that way. Although the buyer did offer a lowball price he may have been trying to see how low the seller was willing to go.

seller is mostly at fault here, his smartass response was unnecessary.

Having shopped for a low miles (<10k) coupe for the past 6 months I think I am somewhat qualified to talk about the price. I don't know where people are getting their data from saying an loaded 09 coupe with less than 10k miles should go for anything less than $55k let alone a coupe equipped dct. The best deal I could find for a low miles 08 coupe 6 speed with tech, premium, enhanced, sound, ipod was around $52k. The best price I could get for a 08 coupe with dct and all those options was $54k. And I'm not basing these off of the asking prices on this forum, cars.com, and autotrader.com. These are the negotiated prices after contacting many seller. However, I did notice a small price variation depending on the color. All the prices quoted above are for AW. AW coupes had higher prices than other colors. It being winter here in the mid atlantic region I think getting this car for 55k would be a good price.

OP, where did you list this car for sale? I would have considered it if I knew about it.

There was no need to insult the guy making the initial offer as if he is some 'lower class' person that should be in a Chevy. He seemed very straigh forward and I too would ask for the VIN or fax report. I sold my mid 90s vert for about 60% of KBB... car was paid for, drove it maybe once a month, just taking up room in my garage. Nothing wrong with lowballing. This shows poor judgement on your part.

I'd like to disagree with you if only for the fact that seeing a car first, liking it, and then finding out is is a salvage titles, or has been in 3 wrecks, or has had 10 owners makes it all feel like such a waste of time. Especially when looking up a carfax report is so quick and easy.

Just recently I contacted a guy about his used A4. He said he was the 2nd owner and had owned the car for 3 years, I found out he is actually the 4th owner and has only had it for 11 months. Saved me a trip and gas money on an otherwise sketchy at best situation.

its not hateful.. its just putting MF low-lifes in there place, thinking they can work the forums, emails and threads to undermind the market situation.. those folks are opportunista's also ready to play on sellers emotions thinking they have a deal and then pulling it. and working the seller again until they get frustrated and finally give it to another bastards friends of theirs.

Heck No!!!

lets meet 2.5 yr later and for the meantime.. let's fly a kite

Sorry to most respectable members but op, who do you think you are? We have a chevy in the drive way and an e92 335i and e92m3. We drink bud light. Does that qualify anyone as a cheap ass baller?

10 bucks says you are some rich kid with ethug mentality. Grow up some and repost in 2.5 years when your balls drop you lamer. Your car is probably not even in your name. You just wanted to see what your self worth is based on your parent equity in the car. /rant

low ball offers or not if you said this to anyone in front of me I would be sincerely embarrased for you and as a BMW owner.

I traded my car ('08 M3 coupe, red/black, 6-speed loaded) at a Ford dealer in Texas for $49,000. I thought I did pretty good since all of the BMW dealers low-balled me. Had about 15,000 miles.

u did pretty good considering the sales tax credit you received on top of the 49K. What were the BMW dealers offering you on an average?

Mostly $45k, some as low as $42k. The dealership I actually purchased the car from and have done SO much business with over the years made it sound like they did me a favor at that number. I knew they could certify it though and they were planning to.

The wholesaler who bought it turned around and sold the car for $54k online, so I'm sure the BMW dealer could have tacked some more on with it certified.

It should be mentioned there are differences between a lowballer and someone that just doesn't have the funds. Sounds like the sell from that thread had dealings with the latter.

lowballer = poor guy who is a dreamer (does not have funds) people with enough money do not have lowballing mentality (ripping other people off or taking advantage of someone's financial situation).... just my 2 cents

I take the term lowballer for face value. Someone that just wants to pay as little as possible.

If I thought they didn't have the money, i'd call them something else. A quick run through Google yields no hits associating lowballers with being tight on funding.
