My recommendation would be let it pass ... Don't get that car it stood idle for some 2 years (see the report) some 2K + miles between 2009 and 2011. Generally a nice car, however I would not get it without a complete inspection at BMW.

On the other side of the coin, I loved my e46 2002 SMG purchased at ~ 20k miles in 2005 it was a lease return, then sold her in 2010 for $25K at ~ 50K miles. The only issue this car had was two rear spring replacements and then normal maintenance. I am still in touch with the new owner he now is nearing 75k miles

So all in all a great car, however, it's not a e9x ... Then I'm certain you know this Mike ... Good luck!

If you're looking for a DD, why not get into a F10 535i? Or even an X3? People might give you shit for it but who cares what the next guy thinks, I'd say they're two nice rides that are understated from factory.
+1 Get an E30 M3. I have a regular E30 and I fuckin love that car.

Just got a message on ebay from the guy:

"If you would like to see my M3, I am available after 12 noon this Sunday or anytime Monday. Please forget your PC, I will not allow it to be connected to my car."

So now I think somethings suspicious and not buying anything from him.

That's shady to send me especially since the guy at his shop didn't have a problem with it as long as he was watching. He wasted my time and his, silly E46 owners....

Thanks everyone for your input. Right now I'm seriously considering supercharging the M3, just worried about the 2008 bearing situation.

the 2009 bearings are also bad like the 2008. see the pics here form a late 2009 M3:

He might think you're trying to clone the key to steal the car?

Get an Evolve system. Hasn't the mysterious bearing noise been present on all years? IIRC, there is not an updated part number for the bearings.

Mike,

You need to check out the FS ads on m3forum.net. Plenty of cars for sale there (some local to you) for bargain basement prices these days.

I used to own a IR E46 M3 coupe that I regret selling to this day. There are some things to look into before buying the car such as rear subframe, vanos hub, door/window seals etc. A thorough PPI at a reputed indy shop should help uncover some of these faults.M3forum.net is a great resource for all E46 M3 related issues/maintenance guides.

There is plenty of aftermarket support for the E46 so you can mod it like crazy! The design is timeless and still one of the best looking cars to ever come out of Germany.

I for one am planning to get a used E46 in about 2 years and use it soley for track duty.

I was looking pretty hard at that car you linked. I'm glad you did a little bit more leg work than I, as I am going to pass. It isn't really easy for me to drive 1.5 hours to check it out, then find a place to do a PPI, and all of that jazz.

Still on the lookout for a clean e46 or e90 M3 that are realistically priced though... :/
