Ive got the passport 8500 x50 and I love it. Its got good range and has great instant-on and POP detection. It also costs around 300 so its not too rough on the wallet

V1, 9500ix, Redline, or STI. Not very cheap, but not the most expensive either. $400 - $500. Everything else is inferior.

If you want something a little cheaper, and inferior, get an Escort 8500 X50 or Bel RX65. Anything cheaper and to me, it's just not worth it. I say, spend the bucks and get one that will work well.

Cheers.

V1.

The first time you get a speeding ticket, you'll wish the money was spent on one.

V1 is the best radar detector for the money. Here is my simple explanation:

If you get a so-so radar detector that costs $200 (about half of the V1) and it works 80% time but when you got unlucky and fall into the %20 where this so-so radar detector doesn't pick up the signal right, you get a speeding ticket and have to pay $300 fine and the cost will be much higher than the V1. What if you got another unlucky speeding ticket...

Okay, I am just messing with you but you see my point here? Trying to get radar detector that's not top of the line and save you $200 or so right now isn't a best decision in my opinion.

Another solution is to obey the speed limit all the time and you will be fine lol.

And this isn't including increased insurance premiums.

For stealthiness, probably. I'd say the V1 is just as good (the detector part), maybe better, definitely cheaper, but not as stealthy. The Laser Interceptor is a better jammer then the LPP, from tests by guysoflidar dot com. The LI is almost twice the cost but I'd spend the extra money.

Cheers.

If you want to save money get a bel 995(around $200). Its the same guts as a Bel Rx65 but with a little less sensitivity. Ive been very happy with mine, and the side benefit is that it doesnt give many false alarms while always giving me enough warning on real bogies, hasnt failed me yet. (with the exception stated below)

Also I think the Bel STI main draw is that it is invisible to detector-detectors like in states like Virginia where its illegal to own one. I dont think its much better than the RX65 or the 995. I think I read this at radartest.com. Actually that website is what made me buy a Bel 995 over splurging and getting a V1.

A caveat though this website hates on the V1 which I dont entirely agree with since other sites and users give it top ranking.

EDIT: I should disclaim that the laser detection was questionable on the Bel 995, since I got popped a couple months ago by a bike cop with a laser gun and I didnt even get a warning. But laser detection is next to pointless, you have to get a jammer to properly protect yourself from them. Oh well off to traffic school I love Cali!

The articles written for radartest.com are written by Craig Peterson -- a notorious V1 hater. I take whatever he says about the V1 with a grain of salt. You can read about some of his antics, just do a Google search. For some fun search on guysoflidar dot com for "Peterson".

If non-detectability is important then the STI is pretty much undectable by the Spectre radar-detector-detector (RDD) used in Virginia and other states. However, the 9500ci and Redline are also claimed to be undectable. The V1 is undetectable to the old RDDs, but is detectable by the Spectre. In fact, the older V1s were harder to detect by this RDD, but newer ones are easier to detect. Go figure.

Cheers.

Here is radar roy's review for the Redline.

http://www.radarroy.com/2009/08/revi...adar-detector/

He claims the Redline is better than the V1 in most cases.
