leather becomes "shiny"

recently brought my m3 in for detail and the guy made the steering wheel becomes "shiny" . As it is supposed to be "matte" , you know what i mean? Is there anyway that i can make it back to "matte"

He probably just put some sort of protectant product on it. With a little use it should go away. Could use some soap and water or some simple green to remove it. Personally don't like product on the wheel or shifter as it makes it slippery.

You can spray glass cleaner or any apc lightly over it and wipe it clean. Then follow up with a leather cleaner/conditioner.

Or get a magic sponge - I'll check back later with the proper name etc. They are unbelievable for taking greasy residue from steering wheel and gear stick leather. Just use warm water on the sponge and no I've no idea how the hell it works but it does.

You mean a magic eraser? I would stay away from that as it is abrasive.

^+ Magic eraser is abrasive, I would not use it. Just use a leather cleaner followed with a good leather protectant. Leather Masters works great for me.

I would not use dish soap when there are so many good cleaners out there that are ph balanced. Depending on your water and what kind of soap, you can really dry it out.

Also, the BMW cleaner will leave the leather with the factory sheen. I've had the problem you mention with meguiars, zaino, and lexol. The BMW leather product is the best I've used.

Leather still has pores, because it is a natural material. If it didn't absorb anything, you wouldn't need a brush, you could just wipe it off. You can enhance how much it absorbs by heating the car in the sun before starting the job.

Any car that sees regular use needs conditioning. The salt in your sweat is going to dry out the leather over time. The movement on the leather, especially on the bolsters, is going to abrade it and make it release moisture. This is especially true on Napa leather...not quite so much on Dakota, which is much tougher...but not as luxurious.
