It defaults to off in the M3. You need to turn it on.

There is no reason to believe that BMW made any improvements other than in software. Their decontenting and changes in materials tell a different story, one of decreasing unit cost.
This might be a stupid question, but the ECU update only necessary if running a DCT? I don't believe that I've ever updated my '08's ECU, but then again I have a MT so don't think that it's necessary (??)

With the savings, I also got another Euro Delivery out of it.
One of the smartest little chess games I ever played.
I too played that same Chess game - '08 to an '11.
Curious if I could do the same on the MY13?

Most engine management is independent of the transmission. An MT equipped car will benefit just as much as a DCT equipped one except for anything that is specifically related to a DCT gear change involving alteration of the engine's behavior during the gear change/engagement (as in how the computer simulates you lifting off the throttle when you have a clutch pedal).

You can be reasonably confident that most changes in the ECU mapping over models years would be to increase efficiency (mpg) and drivability...increasing engine performance (bhp) offers no benefit to BMW (in fact the opposite) unless the headline numbers could be used in marketing to freshen up sales.

IIRC a couple of the software updates "fixed" a flat spot when applying wide throttle opening at lowish revs and another referenced the cold start up cycle.
The first in particular is an improvement worth having.
These apply to both MT and DCT.

There is a variance in actual HP #'s with the same engine built at different times. Also adaptations might play a role as well.

I'll let you guys know when I take delivery of my 2013 M3. I had every intention of keeping this car for the foreseeable future, however Sandy's flood waters disagreed... Lost the '11 and my '99 M3s and an '08 Tahoe (along with quite a bit more, namely the first floor and contents of my house).

2013 Santorini Blue coupe is on order for European Delivery in March.

Thank you! It was rough, but I'm trying to make the best of it. Perhaps I'll see you at the Welt!

Planning my 2nd mid-March ED here. Great time to go if you're willing to gamble on the weather. Germany is basically deserted except for locals and Japanese tourists.

Well it looks like I need to contact BMW to get an idea of which ECU version I have. Annoyed that the tuner didn't tell me about this before doing the ESS flash.
