Cheap Auto Shipping Companies
I am trying to get a car from coast to coast. Anyone have any experience with freight or trucking companies? Thanks in advance.

Are yo looking for cheap or high quality. If you don't give a shit about the car then I'm thiniking anything off an Google search would do.
However, I have used Intercity 3 times, moving all over the country. They are fully enclosed, and chances are your car will be in the same trailer as a Ferrari or Porsche. Up to you.

The lowest quote I got was around $800 from a reputable company. I forget which (sorry). At one time while selling another vehicle I got quotes from about 6 or 7 different shipping/trucking companies. Prices range from $800 - $1200.
A word of caution... don't give them too much information, they like to call you multiple times a week to see if you're ready to ship it. Also emails are off the hook. Some ship in enclosed trailers and others not so you may have to put a car cover at least. OR... you can have someone drive it for you that has some time on their hands and can get a cheap flight home. |

don't look for cheap; rather quality, one that can have GPS tracking system, insurance, etc...
Look on the R3vlimited or E30 forum websites. There are threads made specifically for this. Last edited by positiveions; 06-20-2012 at 11:45 PM.. |

I would do my research and pick the right company. I moved from New Jersey to California and used google to find a broker which gets you the cheapest rate. shipped my 2005 C55 AMG across country for about $900. I got the car, signed off on it and then a few hours later someone noticed a crack in the front bumper. next thing i noticed was a clunking sound coming from the rear passenger side wheel area. took the car in and i thad $3000 in damage to the suspension and bumper. will never go the cheap route again. there are shipping companies out there that specialize in "exotic" car transport and have fully enclosed. pay the extra money and do it right.
I hear good things about http://www.magiccarpetautotransport.com/ i have not used though. maybe someone else has. |

I think the safest way is to deal with an actual shipping company instead of a broker that will give it to the lowest bidder. you will pay double but Its worth it. not only did my car have damage but since it would outside and shipped across country it was filthy!

I used InterCity Lines to ship from Boston to San Diego. I recommend them. Once it goes on the enclosed truck, it doesn't come off until final destination. Same company Jay Leno uses when he buys cars at auctions, etc.
Other cheap carriers will use open trucks (the kind you see on the freeways heading to a dealer) and will "consolidate" cars at various hubs, meaning your car is driven off and on and around to different trucks along the way, no thank you! Last edited by YolkyPalky; 06-21-2012 at 10:50 PM.. |

I am going through this process right now for the first time. I went with intercity due to many positive recommendations. They cost a few hundred more but their reputation seemed worth it. I'll post more direct feedback when I get the car.

Experience with Intercity and DAS.
I just recently shipped a car from Arizona to Ohio. I used a company called DAS. The good - the car arrived in clean and in perfect shape. The bad - it took three weeks including one week of downtime due to a mechanical failure on the truck. They supposedly have GPS tracking but in my experience it didn't work reliably. I did have a new C5 shipped by Intercity Lines several years ago and they did an excellent job.

Good call going with InterCity, once it's on the enclosed carrier it doesn't come off until it's at your doorstep. |

Intercity over DAS
When I chose to go with DAS I had checked with Intercity and they were close to 50% more expensive and it would've taken longer for delivery. The M3 was used so I chose DAS. I did pay extra to (supposedly) get my car on the top level of the trailer. The worse part of using DAS was the whole three weeks I had the feeling that I should have used intercity even if it was more expensive. When I used Intercity the 'worry factor' was much less.

I have used DAS twice and have been very happy with them.
With DAS you can pay extra to get the car shipped in a closed container You also can pay an extra fee for guaranteed delivery date..... My most recent experience was to ship a E55 AMG Wagon from Maine to WA State.... They picked the car up from location on time and it made it to Seattle a day earlier than we were promised..... I highly recommend DAS.......and their customer service is pretty darn good.

Don't be cheap. Go enclosed.
Angels Moving Autos. Best by far, got me an enclosed transport from Dallas to NorCal for $1500, +/- 2k miles. They are a broker but have the hookups with all the carriers. www.angelstransport.com They actually got me to Plycon, the company that did the transport. Outstanding. http://www.plycargroup.com/ |
