Got a ticket for Illegal tint

So I had my tint done for over a year now. Never had a problem with it before until today. I got a ticket for $280 for having illegal tint. The problem is that the guy that did my tint told me before hand that its legal. He gave me a certificate that says its only legal and he only does legal work. The cop checked the tint and it says 13, state law being 35. So my question is what to do now? I'm gonna give that guy a call later on today, but would fixing or removing the tint dismiss my ticket? Thanks.

Removing the tint will normally dismiss ticket. Idgaf and like my car with tints... so I consider this a tint tax and make it a point of rolling down my windows in the presence of popo.

I'd just pay it since It'll cost you about the same to retint.

From what I heard in California tint tickets are no longer fix tickets. Meaning if you remove the tint you still have to pay the fine. That what I heard

13 is a pretty damn big difference from 35 lol.. I'm surprised you couldn't see that. Just pay it and move on. At least you weren't issued a repair order. Then you'd be fucked.

My last car I was pulled over once running 35 front, 15 in the back...since he didn't have a meter, it was 'highly recommended' that I remove it. I never did though...

I'm running 35 all around in this car...and doubt I'd have much issues with it (knock on wood) even though PA has a 'no tint' policy. I know the risks in doing this though...

I'm surprised that you would have gotten pulled over for tint alone. If that's the po-pos way of doing things in your area, I doubt removing it would help. You could plead ignorance if you have documentation...I doubt it would help either. And unfortunately, if you were driving in an area you frequent...you may be subjected to this over and over until it is removed.

I would recommend taking to the installer...while he may not replace it for free...he may at least do it at cost. Just my 2 cents...

i guess it's different in FL. There are plenty of cop cars rolling around with illegal tint. I've got 6% all the way around on my car.

The sun will kill you other wise.... bare minimum in FL is 20% if you park your car out doors most of the day.

Some times they mention it but usually don't do anything. Never bin pulled over specifically for tint though. usually something else and they mention it. When a cop pulls up behind in traffic i usually open the sunroof shade and roll the windows down. Just in case.

I just called my tint guy, hes certain my tints are legal and at 35. I had a few friends look at it and they all believe that its not 13. I live in Oregon and this is the first I've had this happen. Should I just remove the tint altogether? Its the not price of the ticket or tint that I'm worried about. I'm more worried about the insurance part of it. The ticket is $287 when the tint only cost me $170.

I still don't understand how its suppose to be 35 tint but would show up 13 on the meter?

Perhaps the meter is wrong. You can always challenge that in court.

Were you pulled over at night? Sunlight helps with the reading of the tint by a few percent. Most courts REQUIRE you remove the ticket before they let you pay for the ticket

Thanks Watson, hints why I said a few percent in my previous post. Nothing would warrant that big of a gap unless the tint man is lying, or his machine was broke

Do you think "Mobil 1", as a moniker, really preempted their own future branding options quite a bit?

Was pulled over at 10am, but it was raining and really cloudy.

The light outside should have zero effect on the reading of the meter d/t the meter producing and measuring light from its own light source.

Don't know how a tint reader works, but maybe your windows were hella dirty and screwed it up, or maybe you have some weird quality tint made of ceramic or something that made it glitch, who knows. Challenge in court

I meant "tint" lol, but most courts have an officer that will go check if it is off before you leave. Nothing would change the reading that substantially. Either bad meter, or your tint guy is full of shit, contest in court or ask a random officer to check again to make sure his meter was broke before you go to court.

You assume that is the meter he used, there are cheap tint meters which do not have their own light source. Also, and probably correct he was using a portable unit which means it runs on batteries and if the batteries were low it could have low output from the light source if he happen to be using it.

Personally, I rather fight a ticket just so I can show the court the officer has not idea what he is doing.

To the op if you have information from the installer the tint is legal and he can measure it for you and show it it legal I would take it to court and make the officer prove him meter is correct and calibrated.

State law in MD is 35% as well. Hold a white index card behind the window, if you can see it then you are good!

Have you checked up on the laws?? Here in mn it's a "non moving violation" and does not affect ins what so ever... I have gotten at least 10 tint tickets and 5 or 6 no front plate tickets in the past 8 years... My insurance could care less.
