I installed mine a couple days ago. Honestly I don't feel much of a difference, maybe in sound it is a little deeper i think. Anyways I'm still satisfied and i think its money well spent since I got rid of the restrictive filter like Ronin said.

BTW i forgot to mention, it is the oiled version.

I only have about 275 miles on the M3 and just purchased the AFE Pro-Dry performance filter. I don't think I'm going to install it till after the 1200 mile service.

If it can improve the gas mileage a bit then it'll be worth it to me.

I like the sound of this mod. A lot of "bang for buck" as they say!

ordered Friday afternoon and received Sat (thank you for the quick ship HPA). love this mod so far. install was easy (hardest part was finding the right tool to get the airbox cover off) and the sound is more aggressive at higher rpm. I'm actually noticing that the car feels a bit quicker or more responsive, much as GT3 noted. In fact, I drove it around some twisties last night and the car has never felt so quick (though, it should be noted that it was also much cooler in LA last night (~59 deg) than it has been considering I bought the car mid-summer).

Hey Guys, got mine and thanks to the sensational DIY instructions from this forum, had no problem installing it.............until.............I put in the aFe filter and noticed that as its shorter than the OEM and that the spring loaded rod is not long enough to hold it in place

Contacted Nick at JleviSW (sensational guy who provides sensational service), who asked me to check if the spring loaded rod is stuck and not deploying to hold the aFe filter in place.

Haven't had a chance to try this yet and wanted to know if anyone else here had experienced the same problem

PS.....I live in Aust. and am wondering if this is a Country/Model specific issue????

Thanks in advance..........

Mine fit perfectly. Considering the filters are the same size there should not be a problem. Sounds like your spring rod is stuck

Another vote for the stuck spring rod. I picked up a 10-10116 also from JLeviSW, and it fit just fine. Dimensionally it looked identical to the original filter.

+1, there has got to be a reason for putting that charcoal into the filter and the extra density. Why on earth would M gmbh go through all the effort they did to make the engine what it is and this car what it is to then rob it of performance with a more restrictive air filter unless it was necessary?

And I talked to you at BMW Fest and you basically said the same thing everyone on this thread said which is you noticed a difference. In fact, before talking to you at the meet I didn't know much about AFE, or the difference their filters were making.

But let me ask you, is your dry making your car a little louder like the oiled versions?

Also, why do the oil versions lead to more air flow, but less filtration? Sorry if that is a stupid question guys.

Cheers,

Well you have to understand that BMW needs to test and produce the cars for a variety of situations (from arctic cold to dusty desert). Given that the M car is designed for a wide range of uses and a wide customer base, BMW needs to be extremely conservative in terms of what they use as far as performance related upgrades. They also need to take into account emissions when designing the intake which varies by country and even by state.

ChinaOrtega is having the same problem. Your rod seems to be stuck. My rod looks bigger than yours. See below. I would try tapping it with a soft hammer to see if you can make it pop out or maybe WD40 will work...

I would say it will sound the same. There is a very minor increase in airflow with the oiled.

I can imagine how this rod gets stuck now. It's probably just all the dust and stuff getting blown in there from all the air moving around. Let us all know what you do to fix that little nub of yours. Like I said, I'd try tapping it loose first since something like WD40 would only end up attracting more dust in the long run. The spring is very strong, if you tap it a few times, it should just pop right back out.

I took apart the whole piece, but it seems that the Euro version has a shorter rod, I took it apart and it's not stuck, it's shorter, for some reason, Here's a pic, as you can see the round portion of the rod is the one that is smaller, not the base, what I did was cut the base on the OEM filter and glued it to the AFE one so it will hold it in place, but for some reason it's the Euro spec, as e mack from Australia and I get the Euro spec, that's all I can think about, weird.
