Never heard this ticking sound on my engine !

You can fit a torque wrench in there if the plenum is off. Then you can do it with an extension, don't even need u-joints. I've never bothered in any cars I've owned though.

Thanks. It's not my car. My car DOES NOT sound like that at all which is why I used that video as an example for tailgate1234 to compare engine sounds. The light steady lifter tick, tick, tick at idle is normal.

bad rod bearing can be diagnosed in less then 5 min without replacing anything. Disconnect the igniter one after another while engine is running, when banging noise stops you found which cylinder/rod has a bad bering. if noise doesn't go away on any cylinders then it's not a rod bearing.

Finally the best news and i'm glad to hear it !
But now you need another writeup about the new S65
And the pics....what a beauty,just perfect man !
BTW.. about the pic with the note, i saw in German the word "Auftragsmenge" what wants to say in Englisch commissioned quantity(order amount) = 6 !
So personal i think....6 new S65 motors are build and hope not for 6 horror bearings stories like yours !

Congrats on the new motor. How many days or month were you deprive of your car? If you leased your car through BMW financial then now would be the time to ask for a free month.

Bearing noise will be way more obvious than light random clicks.

I do suggest tightening spark plugs perfectly to spec each time as plugs too tight or too lose can make all sorts of clicking and ticking. Happened to me as didn't have plugs tight enough. I used to use qharter turn past hand tight but learned from NGK that 2/3 turn past hand tight is correct
I disagree. That video is exactly what failing bearings may sound like at the beginning. If the engine was being revved in the video it's likely that the tick noise would have increased frequency with rpm.

This was from a month ago, but in response to my question about ticking at idle, the ticking in the video is completely different than the ticking I've been hearing. Glad to hear that BMWNA is stepping up with replacement engines. Hopefully they have enough of an inventory of engines/parts to deal with other engine problems we [won't!] have in the future.

Yes my friend it's all a matter of time before we all get schizophrenic and caused by S65 engine ticking noises !

Is this an issue mainly on Califonia cars due to fuel, and was this addressed in later years 2009 and up? I am in Cal and looking for an m3, and these issues have me a bit worried.

Hey BimmerGirl,,,, BMW didn't really replace the motor. They gave him a warranty after 50k as goodwill, and it covered the engine. To be clear.

From the original post...

'Here is the email I received to confirm the phone conversation,
"Good morning Justin,

Per our conversation this morning, BMW of North America will goodwill an Extended Service Contract for your vehicle. This way, the repair you need will be covered, as will other repairs if they are necessary in the future. I will contact the service manager at BMW (Omitted) to advise him of this goodwill offer, so that they can get the paperwork started for you when you bring your vehicle back to be repaired. They will also be able to advise you what is covered under this Extended Service Contract."

End quote.

I can't see why fuel would be a contributor unless it was diesel.
I think these issues are very minor for the percentage of engines built

My '11 and '12 e92's made exactly the same random ticking noise as the video posted above. I noticed it after my first oil change on both cars. I really only noticed it while idling. My '13 isn't making any odd noises and has 14K miles on her.
