Cost for college
I have a question for those of you that are in college or have recently graduated. I am trying to find out a real world average of what it costs for tuition and books for a semester of college. Obviously there is going to be differences between community colleges and state colleges or private colleges. I'm just trying to get some averages because I have a son who is in his first year of college at the Culinary Institute of America (he wants to be a chef). I was amazed at the cost of that school (36K per semester) and he is telling me that is average for a college and I would be paying that much regardless of where he chose to go. I was more under the impression that he could find a school for less than 10K per semester. I'm I just behind times or is he more in tune with the true costs of a college education? The bottom line is I will pay, or help pay for whatever he chooses, but I was interested in other peoples take on the subject.

yup, USC is around 30K+ a year, I think Cal States are around 2K a semester
36 a semester...thats very expensive...then again, it is a culinary institue, so its a little different I think... If you were to average all colleges I bet you would come in well under 36K per year...if you were to average all private schools, you would probably come in near 36K per year...so 36K per semester is like double the cost of private collage... |

Its the CIA one of the top rated Culinary Institute in the world. He can also try Cordon Blue and the arts institute, I think they are cheaper. Pluse where is he going to go east or west coast school?

The Culinary Institute of America is known around the world as one of the best. It is definitely expensive...not a rip-off.
BTW I work for Chefwear, we make the clothes Chefs wear

I didn't realize that the costs at CIA has gone up that much. I have to say that I've had the pleasure of working with and for CIA grads. Most of them have been top-notch professionals.

University of California breakdown... Not including dorm life if you include dorm life, add 1500$ to the total.
Tuition: 3000 Books: 300 (if you are a smart buyer and if the prof allows you to buy old editions....) Total PER QUARTER: 3300 |

Cal States are more like 7-8 a year. There are a LOT of things you have to worry about besides actual tuition. Like others have said, there is housing, books, and then food, gas money, parking permits, gym membership, club fees, it all adds up. Whoever was telling you that 30k is the norm.. it is for prestigous private schools. CA public universities (UCLA, UCI, UC Berkley) are around 25k a year. Curious, is CIA a 2 year program? jzhang1013: When was the last time you check on those numbers? My friends that go to UC's are on semesters... and they pay well over 13k for an academic yearand I'm not sure about UC's but Cal State dorms are 9k a year. I'll be paying 1k a month for a 12 month housing contract for the on campus apartments this next academic year. Do your research rdkind62! Not just off US news (good for numbers) but blogs from students and alum. You student will thank you for it. |

finssidedown vbmenu_register("postmenu_146695", true); Curious, is CIA a 2 year program?
It is a 4 year program if you take the full curriculum. I think you can to pastry chef in 2 years. I guess one upside to this is he has to do paid externships at various restaurants throughout the world as part of his program and at those times he gets the college credit and does not have to pay any tuition during that semester. His fall semester will be spent at the Broadmore hotel in Colorado Springs. He had the opportunity to work at Spago in Vegas but turned that down for some reason. As for the prices I was reading, it seems those were more in line with what I expected. I guess we are just paying this much because it is considered to be the premiere culinary school. I hope it pays off in the long run. My other son who will graduate high school next year is talking about University of Texas. I can deal with that.

Schools I have been looking at with my daughter recently ranged from 41,500/yr to 56000/year. It's absolutely insane the debt schools are starting kids/parents out with these days. I cannot foresee home ownership for most kids, or many defaulting on student loans.

In broader terms, yes, the cost of a basic 4-year education is becoming a real problem. Not as serious as say, the state of health care, but elbowing it's way up that direction.

My Alma Mater is at 50K room and board, that doesnt include books.
My parents probably spent close to 500K for me and my brother all said and done (he just graduated on Sunday).

http://www.ciachef.edu/admissions/finaid/tuition.asp for 2007-2008 school year
http://www.ciachef.edu/admissions/fi...uition0809.asp for 2008-2009 school year It's about $22k - $28k/year there, based on the year you are in . It's insane to say this, but that's (relatively) cheap compared to most of the schools out there, other than public/state school. |

All UC's are on a quarter system, the only UC that is on a semester system is Bezerkely. The reason is that a shorter quarter system is supposed to be better for the learning process. After about 10 weeks the learning curver plataues, adn students stop learning new stuff. So a class that lasts 10 weeks and then has its finals should have students who are learning the whole time, as opposed to the semester system where students stop learning and kind of stagnate for a few weeks before the final. I went to both a quarter and semester system, and they are both fine, quarter system is super fast, where semester you can take your time a little...then again if you are stuck with a bad professor in the semester system you get him for a lot longer! |
