The communist

On a typical summer afternoon back in the mid '70s my brother was playing guitar in the basement where the band practiced.

I wasn't in the band. Although in later years, I would run the light show.

Just hanging out at home wasn't unusual for me.

An urgent knock on the door prompted me to answer. It was some dude selling a newspaper. I told him I didn't want any. He kept going on and on about how bad the US government was and how bad everything was for the people. I told him I wasn't buying. He kept talking about his communist newspaper. I kept telling him to get out of here. Get off my porch. Leave now, lousy communist. He wouldn't shut up and leave.

I told the communist, "Get the hell out of here or I'm gonna shoot your ass."

He still didn't shut up and leave. I told him to get the f___ out of here.

He must have really wanted to sell his propaganda, and wouldn't just shut up and go peaceably. I slammed the door. He left.

It should have ended there. I could have went back to what I was doing. Maybe I just wasn't doing much, so going back to what I was doing was nothing.

There was no way that I would let it go, as I was infuriated. I had every intention of fulfilling my threat. I don't make threats lightly. I never have.

The closet door was next to the front door. I retrieved my rifle from the closet and ran upstairs with it. With the window open a few inches I spied my mark. He was across the street knocking on a door.

My rifle was a pump action BB gun. I put on 50 pumps to really put some power behind this shot. I turned back to my target and found him coming down the stairs from the house of the neighbor across the street.

With my sights lined up on the communist, I pulled the trigger. He let out a yelp.

I quickly applied several pumps to provide for a second shot.

When I lined up my sites he was bending over with his big ass in my sights. I pulled the trigger and shot his ass, just as I said I would do! I shot that fat assed communist pig.

I just don't understand this guy. Why would he push it so far? He was in the wrong neighborhood for this. He was a fool. He should have heeded my threats. Did he really think that arguing was going to change my mind and that I would end up buying his communist newspaper for four bits to get rid of him?

I was only a kid. Probably just into my teen years. What did he hope to accomplish here? I guess they try to get us while we are young. That explains it. After all, look at how many communists and socialist have taken over our public schools. Look at how many there are in government sporting a D next to their name.

Back to the events...

At this point, fear gripped me. I knew it wouldn't stop here. That commie bastard should have just left. He should have left me alone. He should have known better, that commie bastard.

I may have been wreckless, but I wasn't stupid. I was a smart kid despite my poor judgement. I had to get rid of the weapon.

In the basement with my brother wacking away on the guitar strings I found a good enough place to hide my BB gun. It went under the mattress. That bed was used for many things. I figured nobody would look for it there.

I ran back upstairs and located my Wrist Rocket Slingshot.

I liked that sling shot. This baby would shoot BBs, rocks, lead pellets, whatever. It was less threatening than the looks of my rifle. Maybe I wouldn't get in as much trouble.

It wasn't long before the police arrived. They wanted my rifle. I insisted I had shot the communist with my slingshot. They asked how I could do that with the sling rubber broken. They seemed to believe me when I told them it broke on my second shot.

The communist was standing behind the police saying that I didn't shoot him with a sling shot, but with a rifle. All I would cop to was a slingshot.

After the shootings, while I was hiding the rifle, the communist had went to our next door neighbor's house where he got a bunch of toilet paper to wrap around his bloody thumb. It looked to me like he overdid it to put on a show. But there was some visible blood. He had also called the police from the neighbor's house.

Right there the communist explained to the police that I shot his thumb. He waved it around with toilet paper trailing off it. The communist explained that he was bending over to pick up the BB because he could see it laying on the sidewalk in front of him. That's when the second shot stung his ass. Then he couldn't find the BB.

I confessed that I shot him using BBs for ammo.

The police took both me and my sling shot downtown to speak with the guy behind the desk. He was a sargeant, a chief of police, or something.

My explaination that the communist wouldn't leave wasn't quite good enough. The chief said, "You can't just shoot them. We don't like them either, but you can't just shoot them." That should be a pretty accurate quote. I liked hearing, "We don't like them either..."

I said that I should have just grabbed his papers, tore them up, and slammed the door.

The chief said that I would have to wash police cars for three days. So, I agreed to that. But I didn't remember him telling me anything specific about what three days or where to report. He wasn't a judge anyway.

I never did wash any police cars.

Regrets:
  • From this experience I can say that I regret not just shutting the door after I first told the communist that I wasn't interested.
  • I regret threatening the communist that I would shoot his ass.
  • I regret following through on my threat (although I think it was pretty funny, and I have told certainly a few dozen people all about this).
  • I regret turning over my slingshot to the police. That was a good slingshot even though the rubber tubing for the sling was broken. I could just get some cheap surgical tubing and be back in business.
  • I regret lieing to the police.
  • I regret not washing the police cars that I had agreed to wash.
  • I regret not having anything better to do on a summer afternoon than to argue with and shoot a communist propaganda peddler.
  • I regret letting anger control my actions.
  • I regret being so screwed up and out of control as a kid that this could happen.
  • There has to be more regrets in there somewhere. I can't think of them right now.
There you have it: the second of my regrettable incidents that I have fully described in this thread.

What should be the next regret that I remember?
  • The fire
  • I was minding my own business riding my motorcycle and a cop car started chasing me
  • The ugly old ogre
  • “You’re quiet when you smoke”
  • The Devil’s dining table

This was in Washington. I've been a changed man since 1984. I'm just confessing, I guess. Although I don't have much remorse regarding the communist. I have remorse for my past self.

Back in the '70s the cold war was reality. We had air raid drills at school. Mutual Assured Destruction was the official policy of both sides. The coummunists were very present and in your face. They were invading society. They are much more acceptable today to a leftist minority. They are, however seeking the same end to western power and freedom.

Of course, we talk a lot more about radical extremist Islam. Of course they are a huge threat. But that doesn't lessen the threat from the left.

I am not trying to make an excuse. I guess I am speaking to where my regrets are, and it isn't a regret of feeling sorry for the communist.

Just speculation here, but I would guess that this communist stopped peddling papers. I would not be surprised if he became a school teacher. You know, that is the way for the left. They go after your children.

There's another regret I could write about. Regarding PCPAC. I'll have to look, but I think it was related to this organization here.

If I started listing all of my regrets this thread would quickly surpass the Longest Thread ever thread. Shall I start?

To begin with, how did you know he was a communist? Lots of groups hate the US government, including Libertarians and similar (~opposite of communists).

I get the impression that you have a Libertarian bent.

Oh, I have tons of regrets. Unload one and another one comes to mind. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday I had a hard time getting to sleep. Poor kitty. Last night I slept like a baby. That's two essentially released.

The title of his paper included the word communist. There is no doubt whatsoever that he was a communist.

I am not Libertarian.

I've never been called a talented joker before. Thank you.

But these are true accounts. The only "exaggeration" I can find is regarding "That bed was used for many things." It wasn't really used that much, and I don't think it was ever used by me. Most of that would have been somebody elses memories. But I guess there is one incident there where I was involved that was regrettable. I'm sorry about that.

I could have told the story much more abbreviated. Then it would not be much entertaining and it would not get it all out of my system.

Also, I like to write.

I don't think I am all that messed up anymore. I just have some regrettable memories. I am letting them go one at a time. At the moment, I don't feel that much like writing about one. I guess I am enjoying the release of the first two. It is a relief. It's the lifting of a burden off my back.

In much, I was a LOT more tame than others. But those are their stories to tell. I am not that comfortable telling other living people's failures except where it is directly related to my confession.

My fiction can be found over here and here. I intend it to always be clear when it is fiction (except rarely in a joke thread where everybody is making jokes and it should be understood as a joke).

The shock value comes in the telling of the story, probably not the facts behind it. For example...

In answer to a hypothetical "Cat scratched my ride" thread:
A cat pissed me off once. I put it in a cardboard box and dropped it off in a vacant lot.

In answer to a hypothetical "What kind of trouble have you gotten away with" thread:
I shot a guy with my BB gun and said it was a slingshot.

If it really happened, your memory is probably a lot more specific than that. For people to understand the situation, a brief summary just doesn't cut it. That is, if you want anybody to know.

You guys can tell your history, too. In many respects mine is pretty tame, though certainly regrettable and in need of release.

This is what happens as you get older. The things of your past haunt you. Hopefully through confession, you can rid yourself of ongoing guilt.

For the fun of it I asked a guy near me at work, "If a cat scratched your ride, you know, your nice paintjob, what would you do about it?"

He replied, "Kill the cat."

I asked the same guy "What kind of trouble have you gotten away with?"

He said, "I just haven't had much fun."

I asked him "What about I shot a guy with my BB gun and said it was a slingshot."

He just said, "Ain't ever done anthing like that before."

So, I asked, was it shocking to ask you that? He said, "No. It was perplexing." He couldn't really think of the words, but it was certainly not shocking at all.

I am pretty certain that is not an atypical kind of response to these two questions.

If it's a vivid description, then it gets a whole different reaction. Look at the movie "Pulp Fiction" for instance. That could have been told with many different tones and gotten totally different reactions. That movie was like stark-naked reality!

Try those questions on somebody who hasn't seen this thread. I doubt you would even get a reaction. Hand them a copy of the full event, and I would think there would be a much different reaction.

This makes me think of our news media coverage of so many events. In a sound bite, anything goes. No great shock. Tell the depth of the story and it seems to be a whole different story.

Could you imaging a quick blurb on the new, "The Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed today. Now to the weather..." Compare this to the reality of the event. It's a whole different concept.

BTW: The anniversary of the bombing is coming up 4/19 for those who don't remember this event.
