Does this sound right? I don't drive it hard at all, and I had the 1200 mile service done about 2 months after I took delivery.
Yes when i get the oil level message is usually mean i need to do my change oil ...

i change oil every 7k ...

depending on driving habits as well some will add between 3-5k so 5k for you its pretty normal..

For the oil change at ~15K, the oil level indicator was at the half way mark. For ~30K, needed to add a quart about a week before the scheduled change. And now at 50K, just needed to add a quart with 7K remaining until the next scheduled change.

Driving habits have remained the same. Some spirited driving with the car seeing redline, but overall a ton of highway driving.
i dont think thats true..

i had mine new and had added oil from 3k to 7k depending on my driving habits... I now have 75k and last time my oil level message came on was exactly at 6.5k which was my time to change the oil ...

How common is this type of oil consumption?
I think I am seeing similar oil usage on 2008 car.

42k miles, mostly freeway driving (3/4 of my driving). Some city driving / stop start (1/4).

Not saying it's true for everyone, but it's what I'm experiencing.

I have close friends at BMW and most techs are saying depending on how you drive 1 quart of oil every 1000 to 1200 miles is normal. I know this doesn't sound right to most but unless you have visual leaks or signs of oil burning oil ( excessive smoke from tail pipes) most dealers with tell you there is no problem.

If my car burned that much oil I'd either set it on fire or push it in the ocean.

That's 10-15 quarts before the factory scheduled oil change interval.. not normal to burn that much on this motor.. no way.

My car needs a half quart every 7K. I didn't follow the ridiculous break-in procedure. Was hitting redline like a madman at 600 miles. I didn't beat it off the start but did a number of deceleration runs down hills, varying throttle and load, etc.. The engine has always been very strong and zero issues.

I could understand turbocharged cars doing this. I don't know so much about NA. I haven't noticed the car burn any oil at all.
