Comments on short shift kits?

So I drove the 911 GTS yesterday, I really loved the feel in the manual gearbox. The throws where short and felt very rigid and a bit metallic. It was perfect. So I was thinking perhaps a short shift kit would make things better in the M. I had a look on IND's website, they sell Rogue Engineering and AA's kit. Any comments on theese? Are there any other options?

I highly recommend RE's SSK...it retains OEM feel in shift throws (no notchiness) and it's the most significantly R&D'ed kit available IMO.

I love the AA kit. Possibly the smoothest/best feeling shifter I have ever felt....on any car. Absolutely no notchiness

not sure about the short shift. but most of the people that i know installed it sold it.

plus i believe you have to remove something big to install this (not sure but hope someone can correct me)

anyways so to the OP i decided to install the performance shift knob and its made the shifting a night and day.

Personally I thought it was more notchier.

I believe it is definitely possible but without a lift it will be very hard work. You have to drop the mid pipes to get to the shifter assembly. Reason is is that the shifter assembly drops out from the bottom.

Is this the new AA or the old AA.?

Bump for more info...I am curious about this as well. Doesn't seem to be much in the archives when searching. I guess this isn't a popular upgrade.

Yes, you need to drop the mid pipes in order to install a short shifter.

I can't speak on AA short shifters but I've had the Rogue Engineering short shifter for about 5,000 miles. Here was my initial impressions taken from by other post: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=456187
  • The RE SSK sits noticeably taller compared to stock. It almost seemed too tall at first and still is a tad bit awkward from what I'm used to in a visual sense.
  • Each gate feels extremely well delineated, there is practically no play once the shifter is in gear.
  • Odd gears feels very short. That is, when shifting to gears 1, 3, and 5 you will immediately notice the shortened throw.
  • Even gears do feel shorter than stock but not as drastically as the odd gears.
  • The mechanical "whirling noise" or "spinning noise" is indeed present.
  • The noise is more noticeable at higher RPMs and present from 1st -> 2nd -> 3rd (sometimes). Personally I don't find it annoying or very loud.
  • 1st and 2nd gear is still a tad bit notchy but less so because of the shorter throws.
  • The taller shifter combined with the shorter throws makes shifting much more comfortable and natural.

IMHO the Porsche's shifters are still much smoother and shorter. Both the 997 S and Cayman S had better shifter experience than the E92. it makes you WANT to shift.

You really need to try driving a car equipped with either SSK to see if you find it worth the money. I got a great deal on the RE SSK so it was very worth it for me.

Hope this helps.

Been a Rogue SSK owner since day one, we are a stocking distributor for all Rogue products.

Here's a comparison of stock vs Rogue:

Also, here's an overview of the install process: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=271196

Hope this helps!

How much taller is the RE? Does it feel like your driving a truck?

Agreed, not worth it. I would sell mine too if I didn't have to pay to re-install the stock piece.

The spinning noise is unbearable with the Rogue. I sold mine as well. Plus the improvement in shifting is not worth enduring the noise.

noise was minimal in my opinion, didn't bother me at all. it was fine, just wouldn't bother doing it again. one of those completely unnecessary mods in my opinion.

Considering a SSK for my e90m. I've tried several aftermarket kits on my e39 m5 as well an OEM e60 545i shifter, which was a nice compromise.

Is there a similar OEM upgrade for the e90 using a factory shifter from another model?
