Up for sale is a 2008 M3 rear differential with only 5k miles.
Bought for my car as project but now selling car.

Quote from body shop who sold this too me : "Vehicle was rear-ended and small break-away muffler tabs did their job and broke off. These are only one mounting point for muffler and wouldn't be missed. Insurance replaced whole diff. Car was driving perfect, no leaks or otherwise on this piece."

This thing is built like a tank and shows when looking at or handling it. Solid engineering here.

Always good to have a spare for those racer types or great for 135/335 conversion project.

I have received many inquiries as to the 135/335 conversion. Its time to share my exhaustive research on this topic. Please take the time to read through this if interested in making your 135/335 into the vehicle it should be. As info I am currently selling my car before I could start/complete this conversion.

As an intro we all have many choices when it comes to aftermarket limited slip differentials and according to every magazine that has decent testers this piece is the missing link to making the 135/335 a very potent sports car. Of course these models and others were designed intentionally without LSD by BMW over the past 13 years plus to keep the M3 on top, which it has every right to be but dang are they expensive. Most popular LSD options are Quaife, Wavetrac, and OS Giken.

So these are some options for aftermarket LSD’s. Now to create a solid OEM style conversion would really blow some doors and tires off. The great thing about the M3 diff is that all the components except the drive shaft bolt right up to the 135/335 chassis. I’ll get to the drive shaft equation later.

Now for the conversion details.

First, parts that are required.

The cheapest prices, for new parts, I found are through Tischer BMW online.

1. M3 manual diff, part # 33102283006 = $2150
2. Axles, left part # 33212283457, right part # 33212283458, = each $347
3. Drive shaft manual trasmission, part # 26102283660 = $583
4. Center bearing (holds shaft to vehicle in mid of chassis) part # 26122283046
= $59
5. Hex bolt, part # 22326760945 (part of center bearing assembly) = $1
6. Shim, part # 26111227583 (part of center bearing assembly) = $6

Total for all these parts comes to $3493

Most expensive is the diff itself. Good luck finding one at a junk yard, spent a month phoning around the nation doing that. If you do find a wrecked 2008+ M3 they are only selling the whole thing.

Second, measuring, removal, and install.
Now to the driveshaft equation. Here is a breakdown of various specs for each vehicle. The difference column is between the 135 and manual M3.



Plug the numbers into Excel to see the 335 difference. (This doesn’t really matter due to a shop taking custom measurements anyway) You will see that the axles need replacement due to larger bolt pattern. Also the diameter of the M3 axles are larger and more robust, which is good for adding power down the road.

The M3 driveshaft is divided into two sections, as is the 135/335, and only require the rear M3 section for this conversion. I called around and the M3 driveshaft is only sold as a complete unit. The stock front half off the 135/335 must be used due to mounting to the transmission. The stock front half will need to be shortened if a 335. If the 135 then the back half of the M3 to be shortened slightly if at all.
I do not have the specifics on measurements for either end on 135 or 335 and this is where a reputable shop comes into play. Took some digging in my area to find a shop that could remove and measure both the stock front and rear M3 section and then send to a driveshaft specialty shop to join the two and balance properly.
After calling and visiting many shops I found Sterling Autosport who was up for the task to remove and measure. (about 6 hrs labor, take off and reinstall, at $95 hr =$570)

Out of Orange County, San Diego, and Inland Empire, I finally ended up at Inland Empire Driveshaft. They knew their stuff and could perform this job. Around $350 for custom shaft, joining stock front shaft and back M3 shaft and balanced.

So that takes care of the trickiest part.

The M3 diff fits up to the stock mounting points, custom driveshaft in place, the M3 axles bolt right up to the stock hubs and your ready to lay down some 11’s, launch, drift, and corner like never before! You will have a genuine M3 OEM diff growling from the rear of your car, how sweet would that be.

With parts $3493, install $570, driveshaft work $350, the total is around $4413 before tax. (or with this diff I’m selling minus $1375, so a total of $3038)

*****When the shop takes this all apart it would be highly recommended that you replace the subframe bushings to M3 spec at the same time since they will be right there to take out. Also a good time to replace rear sway bar too. HP Autowerks has the best deal on subframe bushings and sways.

Based on the pictures that you posted it looks like this diff is for E60 cars with a 3.85 final drive ration.

I don't think it will work on e90/e92 M3 cars.

That's what I thought when looking at the stickers. But it came off a 2008 manual M3 for a fact and the E60 does not run a 3.85:1 ratio. Those codes on the stickers do not pull up anywhere online, typed in any configuration. If someone can crack that code then more power to them.

The E60 2006-2009 M5 has a 3.62:1 ratio, check this link, and check every E60 model in that database and none run a 3.85:1.

I have a 335, and after this weekend of some skid pad fun, I realized the one tire fire is a bit annoying. I have looked into other LSDs and they are so expensive. Then it hit me, why not look on the m3 forum and see if someone is selling a stock one, and check it out. I looked at your research and you said that the only thing you have to change is the driveshaft, where would you get a modified one from? When adding up the price why do you have the price of axles included, do the 335 ones not mount up? Also, would this dif affect my speedo?

LSD's are the key to getting the power down!

The modified drive shaft is something to be done at a local shop. For your vehicle you can use the front half shaft of your 335 with the back half of an M3. The prices I included are the whole M3 shaft since that's the only way they sell it.

The axles from the M3 are required due to the larger bolt pattern from the axle to the diff.

Not sure on the speedo, prob not much if any.
