Backfire / Pop - Does yours? [E92 M3 '07]

Guys,

does your car backfire (not flames), but makes pops and burble sound
when you rev and lift off from accelerations etc?
Mine does it all the time! Fun as hell, but that can only mean its got
too much unburnt fuel in the exhaust?!

Worry - bad for the engine, something wrong?
And why my oil consumption is so high (another thread?).

First I thought it was my modded x-pipe/backbox but still does it with my box.

My mates '09 DCT doesn't do it at all. Not sure if its a manual gearbox thing
or just my car running insanely rich or something?

Example, like that at the beginning. Its a really loud pop!
Still does it with my exhaust, much deeper sound but hell does it 'bang'.

(Sounds wrong... )

My manual car doesn't do that with the standard exhaust. It might be the sign of something is wrong with yours but it does sound good!

I wonder too, but like said, only does it after my new xpipe / backbox.

Maybe cause the second cat / resonator delete & new back box is letting
more sound / fuel burn in the exhaust when it did happen before but couldn't hear it?

I have the same Oem exhaust mod.(replaced the 2 big perforated pipes)
I have not this pop sound !
I think your problem is caused by your secondary cats. removal ,your car sound's also match more raspy than mine.
So...when it's possible, mount your secondary cats. back on(with clamps) ,and give it a try.
BTW...when i step on it during cold start cycle sometimes i hear also a bit backfire .
Conclusion....i think nothing is wrong here, and when you want to be sure, mount your secondary cats. back on,and when it still pops (backfires) than there is another problem...running to rich, and that you must see on your fuel consumption.

My x-pipe has been chopped and welded with straight pipes
so I can't do a swap.

No negligible difference in fuel consumptino.
Still around 17-23mpg like before.

16 l/100km to 12 l/100km.

I guess people's still get occasional pops with oem and mine is more extreme with the secondary cat removed.

How you will do this with the car inspection ( X-pipe welded on with straight pipes)and the emissions test ?(will fail)
Here in Belgium they look under the car and with cats. removal i will fail ?

Mine never did stock. With Eisenmann Race it does now and it sounds great.

Woohoo - not just me then!
I love it when it pops, bit more character.

My primary cats are still there, so shouldn't be an issue with emission (MOT/TüV) / engine lights.

my catless gintani race exhaust does this allll the time, whether its shifting up, or in the midst of high revs due to downshift. all kinds of pops and gurgles and backfires and my friends noted to me a confirmed flame once, due to downshifting to 1st going maybe 35. i didnt see it, but it sounded like a grenade went off. love it

LOL. Grenade. Yeah does sound like that sometimes. When I lift off at 4000rpm second gear. Its quite a loud boom. Use to be a sharp pop but now it sounds muffled but still burble and pops a lot. Just never heard anyone else that experienced it over here.

Been around cars my whole 40+ years, I know the difference between good noises and bad noises. Mine are VERY good noises! My car sounds right, REALLY right.

New video onboard. Take a listen Hope you like

Zoom H1 mounted between the exhaust.
You really need some good 2.1 speakers (to replicate the bass/drone) / good good headphones to get the most out of the recorded sound.

Hopefully should get our M3 this week and the first thing it's having done is the exhaust mod. I think I'll leave the cats but remove the silencers and do the back box see how that sounds

Sorry to revive an old thread, but:

I recently installed the akrapovic evo xpipe (primary cats removed, secondary and resonators still there).

I had the install done about 2 weeks ago.

I had my first "backfire" today. Sounded real fun!

Worth noting, I filled up with Shells V-Power+ for the first time in a year (before I had the akra xpipe installed) yesterday. Maybe this has something to do with it? Who knows.

Sounded great though
