Is the New Ford Mustang Better Than A BMW M3?

From Jalopnik-

Odd question to ask, right? But judging by the numbers, yes. Is that all there is to it?

In reality? Probably not, but then, "better" is relative. It's here that we'd caution you to remember the traditional line about apples, oranges, and comparisons. Both the 2011 Ford Mustang GT and the current BMW M3 offer staggering performance, V-8 power, and rear-wheel drive. One is a pedigreed European sport sedan, the other a charmingly raw piece of traditional American muscle. As to which one we like better, well, that depends on the day, our mood, the road, and how much diner food/schnitzel we had that morning. Different cars, different purposes, both awesome for entirely different reasons.

Still, aren't those numbers nuts? Progress rules.

I hope this will lead to less people driving M3 and more people driving the mustang

I need to feel more special when I'm driving the car around.

I know, totally different cars. The numbers might be close on paper but in a real road race (not drag) I think we all know who the winner would be...

I must confess, I am not a hater of Mustangs, or Ford in general. While the above numbers may be skewed in favor of the Mustang, we can't deny they're close. That aside, I still feel the M3 is a better value. You get better quality engineering and materials, plus luxury with advanced technology. If the Mustang came with IRS, LSD, better quality materials/fit/finish, and luxury, I'm sure some M3 owners might be persuaded to go that direction - even if the Mustang cost a few more G's then, it would still represent a better value.

Look at it this way, what would you rather drive coast-to-coast? The M3 hands down. Also, let's not forget BMW's 4-year/50K miles free maintenance. I think Ford has a winner, but not quite an M3 alternative, all things considered.

I had a 06 GT which uses the same dashboard as the new 2011 and I had a dash creeking noise that drove me nuts. I had a blast driving it but you cant compare the 2 cars. They might have the same performance numbers but the M3 is just a 10 times more better designed. I almost ordered a 2011 stang and decided on a preowned 335i .
The Mustang has its good points but it will never be what a M3 is.

The better driver.

Numbers are nice, but it comes down to how well the driver can drive. I hope all of you that are claiming victory for the M3 on a road course, have enough track experience to extract a high percentage of the M3's ability.

Bench racing is useless. I applaud Ford for really stepping up their game with the 2011 Mustang.

I don't know of a better sounding stock exhaust than the mustang gt. Exotics excluded of course. V8 'stangers are a ton of fun to drive, but no comparison to the total package our beloved M3's offer. So, to the original poster, please go get a GT. The less M3's on the road the better....as far as I'm concerned.

To drive as an everyday car,the M3 is the winner but for best bang for the $ the Stang is an absolute steal!

'Stang's a great value and if you trail brake it enough it will actually turn and be fun. M3's the better driver, period.

those numbers are pretty even...the Mustang looks pretty good too but then you sit inside and you realize why it costs what it does. Interior design and overall fit and finish are pretty important to me.
