Brake disc warped!
Hi all!
Had my e92 m3 for a few months now, and overall very happy with the car, having come from boxster s, cayman s, elise, vx220 and some more track focused cars too. M3 seems to handle most jobs you give it! My first experience with BMW customer service has been pretty awful, which has certainly left a bitter taste! My car has done 23k miles now. I've recently had a grinding noise coming from front offside disc. Booked in dealer - found warped disc! Have to replace both discs to keep them even, and then have to replace pads even though they have 14k miles showing on computer! £600 in all! No warranty on discs of pads! BMW told me, quote, "if they had more wear left, then we would have considered it. They have just 0.6mm to go.". It wasn't until I checked on the forums that these discs only have 1.6mm of life from new, so this calculates to another 14k left yet! They still won't look at it! I expect a little more from a £60k car! So dealers quoted £600 for discs and pads, plus tyres need doing- another £900 for pair rears! Iknow im getting ripped on the tyres, so will get these elsewhere, but am I getting ripped on the brakes too? Dealers got me really, as they want to charge me for time to check discs even if I took it off them.... Opinions?? |

did you buy the car new?
have you had a look at the discs they took off? For me a warped disc this late in its life I would be pushing hard for warranty replacement. Usually you cook them when they are new if you are too heavy on the first 500-1000 miles but something thats been bed in either has some sort of defect or they've been hosed since you bought the car. not sure I'd skim brakes on a 400BHP car myself. Neil.

Defo don't skim them - as a Brake disc reduces in thickness, so does its ability to absorb and dissipate heat. Once minimum thickness has been reached, a significantly reduced braking capacity can result. Symptoms include premature brake fade and increased stopping distances.

with both bremo and ap the chances of warping are increased as they have much softer discs!
Neil.

I doubt very much that they were warped. They probably only had pad deposits on them.
It's an easy cop out to say they were warped. I'm not even sure that the dealers have the ability to correctly check for a warped disc. |

Hi guys - thanks for all the posts. Yes, a reskim wouldn't really be the way, but thanks for the advice...
It's happened since a housing around the discs became loose and rubbed against them. Since then, I've always heard a grind under braking. BMW are being extremely unhelpful, I'm appalled at the customer service! I'm going to have to go ahead with the work as I need the car back. £739 for front discs and pads Oh well... I'll persue it afterwards with a strong letter. |
