Exactly ! Look at that incredible mechanism. It deserved a better, more connected interface to the driver from the factory.....but then again my 6MTcame with a rubbery broom handle for a shifter until I swapped it out.

6MT vs DCT is like football teams in different states. We all have our team. But when outsiders attack us (Insert car brand name here) we are united as one. I just read through the thread and after scores on both sides it looks like it is DCT 10 - 6MT 6 - Chocolate ice cream 1 - Vanilla Ice cream 1 - Coffee Chip 1. This is not however an official score and If someone wants to count up the scores I am open to any revisions. Although I am certain there is one vote each for the ice creams.

What lighter material should the DCT shift mechanism be made from to appease those shifting with a slower, manual system?

Jokes aside, I am saying both are competent. DCT probably took a bit more time to launch to perfect mapping to harmonize with the engine. Both should be good for appropriate use.

The criticism has nothing to do with the weight of the paddle. Aluminum (or even carbon fiber) is more befitting a $70,000+ car than is plastic, the same with interior door handles.

To answer the op’s question, yes the dct is a better match for the engine. You have the whole rev range of the engine literally at your fingertips. You can downshift multiple gears with 1 click and disappear while the mt car fumbles. Also it’s very easy to play around in lower gears while it requires more concentration in the mt. But these are the qualities that makes me appreciate the mt and makes it more “fun to drive” for me as I challenge myself to drive better each time.
