Arrow M3 or 1M...which one would you get?

Hey Guys. I really need your opinions on this one to help me out. I have always loved the e92 M3 and it has been a dream car for me. I drive a e92 335Xi at the moment as my daily driver, but got a new job a while ago and I am getting a company car for my daily driving, so I was thinking of trading my 335 for a M3 or a 1M. Really confused at the moment, because I really don't know which way to go

I am planning to keep the M3/1M for at least 5 years as it will be a weekend drive around car / track days and a project as well.

Here is what I am thinking, I really think that the manual transmission M3 would be more reliable than the 1M, because I haven't heard anything going wrong with the M3 (Let me know if there is something to be aware of). 1M ... based on the 335 engine is not that reliable (just my opinion, please correct me if I am wrong), based on the problems that I had with my car, fuel pump, injectors etc, don't really trust the N54/N55 anymore... On the other side, forgetting the possible technical issues, the 1M over here is much more rare than the M3, which makes it a little more interesting and maybe keeping the value better. One thing that really bothers me is that I am planning to mod the car (M3-supercharger, 1M-DP's, IC etc...) and the 1M's reliability really comes in question at that point, though I haven't heard anything bad yet, but I have heard only positive things about the supercharged M3's and that after many many miles they are almost as reliable as stock.

Prices here are really high compared to the US, the M3 I am looking at is a 2008 with 32000 km on it and priced at 75k euros which is around 90k USD. The 1M is almost new, 2012, 8k km's on it and priced at 85k euros which is around 102k USD Thanks to our lovely taxes...

Long story short, which route to go? Guys please let me know WHY as well

Thanks for your help!

M3 all the way, the V8 is unbelievable.

The 1M is kinda ugly while the E92 M3 is hot hot hot.

How much tax for an imported M3 in Finland? I am trying to sell my M3, 43,000 km, clean service history, would like to get 31k euro.

Stock for stock I much prefer the M3, but since you're planning a forced induction mod I'd go with the 1M for the far lower cost of achieving big power gains.

Test drive both and see which one you like more. They are completely different due to the engines / size / weight.

Thanks. Depends on the year, but if your car is a 2007-08, I think the total import tax would be around 25k-27k euros + I hate the front bumper reflectors the us spec have (Sorry ) and would really like the eu spec odo and ac digits in metric units. I have looked into the us market and it might save me 5-7k euros, but buying a car in US would mean to fly over and have a look myself and changing a euro spec front bumper, odo etc , so basically in the end the savings would be around 2k-4k euros which is not worth the hassle and it is really hard to sell a us spec car here if we are talking about European cars imported from the US... GLWS though and thanks for your help

Thanks, but don't you think it would take almost the same amount of money achieving 450-500ish hp with the 1M (pistons, rods, turbos etc) than installing a stage 2 supercharger on the M3 (around 11-13k euros + install)?

when you talk of big power gains, do you mean achieving same power as a stock M3!?

I fell on a 1M with my stock M3 6-speed yesterday on the highway, we raced twice, I was almost wondering if he was trying until the guy arrived at my side and did a big thumbs up at me, he was like !! Imagine with my VT1 that I'm installing tomorrow!!

If I decide to get a 1M, I would like it to be faster than the stock M3, yes, but the question is reliability on a modded 1M?

Just keep the your 335xi for the weekends and mod it to your liking and that will save you a TON of money. Then go spend that saved money on lavish vacations and girls. You will thank me later in life.

Wow, $90K for a 2008! I vote for the V8. You only live once, make your dream come true, the M3 is a proper enthusiast car.

If you want a coupe, the 1M is a much rarer car if that matters to you. If you need/want a sedan, M3 without a doubt.

Personally a 1M with an S65 swap would be an amazing car. I saw a VO 1M driving down the road last week and it looked good, I was surprised how good it looked actually because I don't really like the regular 1 series.

A 1M feels nothing like a 335i. Hell, a 135i feels nothing like a 335i.

A 1M with an S65 would be awesome. The reliability of the 1M is the biggest question that I have at the moment.. I would like to here some opinions from the 1M owners...

Thanks guys for your replies

Car for car I like the M3 more.
The 1m Is just so much fun to drive though and the exclusivity is great.

To give you some perspective I was just out in Monterey, CA for autoweek. 458s are everywhere during that Wednesday-Sunday. Guess how many 1Ms I saw both driving around and at Shows...0.

If you have any questions PM me. My brother has the 1M. He's had it for almost a year so I've driven it extensively.

I own both a 335xi and a 1M. The 335xi is tuned and the 1M is stock (aside from a midpipe).

Although they share the N54, throttle response in the 1M is substantially better (different fly wheel and different engine management software) although not in the same league as the M3. The 1M feels agile and lively to drive, and sometimes a little scary (if you turn DTC all the way off). Steering feel and precision much better with 1M, although some might find it a bit too light for their liking. Everytime I get back in the 335xi I immediately notice the car's greater mass and the much heavier steering.

I have driven an e92 M3 with DTC. The S65 is incredible as the revs reach higher and higher. That being said, I prefer the driving dynamics of the 1M (I am biased of course ). The shorter wheel base really makes the car very fun to drive.
