Good info. I think these newer OEM BMW batteries are AGM (absorptive glass mat), correct?

If so, AGM batteries are much more difficult to bring back than a lead acid battery if they die. It takes a battery conditioner and about 24 hours. Just keep that in mind if you let the car sit for awhile.

So are you driving daily with this battery? Or do you put it in to race and then go back? Its a good idea, but I wouldent want to have my battery die filling with gas or something... How is it if your driving daily with it.

So far so good, the car sat for three days, no issues. On my E46 M3 SMG, at times my braille battery would die if the car sat for only 1 day.

I thought I'd report back, the CSL/ MC battery is working great. The car sat for a few days this week, no problems like I had with the Braile.

Hmmm, starting to get the "low battery" level light.

This "quest" of finding the perfect low weight battery for the M3 that works all the time and actually finding out that such a thing does not exist reminds me of Wesley Snipes in Blade...

Very surprised the battery is not working out. Would have been a mod I would have done for sure.

Very surprised indeed...

My M3 is basically driven on the weekends only these days, and I haven't had any issues with my mini battery crapping out on me after sitting for 5 days at a time. (even on very cold Saturday mornings)

Drew,

Take your car to Tom's shop, so he can test the charging system and your 'key off' current draw load.

Tom will be able to see if all the factory installed modules in your M3 are going into sleep mode like the are supposed to...

Also, don't leave things like phone chargers, ipod adapter/chargers, radar detectors, and VBOX performance data-logging computers, etc. on in the car all the time. (unplug or turn off that stuff when you get out of the car)

It's absolutely essential to monitor your key off current consumption very closely, and to develop a very strict routine that limits your exposure to external current sapping accessories. (which can drain your battery in between trips)

I would think it would partly be responsible due to battery registration. AGM batteries need to be registered in order for the alternator to properly deliver the correct charge, or overcharging can occur - venting the battery and destroying the cells in the process. This will become more critical as our M3s get older.

Auxiliary power within the cabin is cut off after 35min due to IBS, however this doesn't account for a possible failing control module that can keep CAN or MOST devices alive within the vehicle.

I went through the "reset" and "registration" things with my Braile and it did not help things. Based on the various reports of success and failures (meaning those who get no warnings and those who do) the ability to run a lightweight battery seems almost random. Of course I don't accept that it truly is random, the cars must be outfitted or behaving differently in regards to car off current draw.

This was almost a year ago also - age must be also taken into effect.

All good Bro, and you did warn people, maybe it's the DCT? It may not be a problem on a 6mt, like the SMG vs. 6MT on the E46, not sure, I already swapped the stocker back in.

Tom we need to talk more about installing that Escort system!

Sure thing, hit me up when you have some free time - I'll print out a display panel in the meantime.

No idea what you mean. My Braille battery was brand new and my OEM battery was only approximately 1 year old. Maybe you mean my age .

I see 90Ah rating for the OEM M3 battery an 55 Ah for the CSL/Mini battery so you're still dealing with nearly half the capacity on the battery. I'm not surprised at all that there are still issues. The capacity determines what kind of reserve time you'll get out of the battery which is directly related to how long it will last between starts. Since there is always a small draw on the battery even when the car is off, that reserve capacity is important unless the car is driven daily or its put on a trickle charge when not in use.

I ran a LW Braile battery in my E46 Supercharged M3 and if the car sat for more than 1 day, it would not start, etc. So I had no plans on using it on the E92. But the OEM MC/CSL battery should yield enough power, and is a nice compromise for some WR.

OEM Battery on the scale.

Mini Cooper/CSL Battery on the scale.

OEM and CSL/MC batteries next to the Braile.

The OEM bracket is bolted into the appropriate place, NO AM bracket is needed, OEM fitment FTW!

The Drain is a perfect fit and placement as well.

Finshed, sure enough it's a perfect OEM fitment!

Got it in my E36 track car ,awesome and i leave the car in the garage for 6-8 weeks and starts right up.
