Exclamation finally installed my JL trunk sub :)

took ages, but finally did it
installed my trunk sub

4 gauge power cable from battery using OEM connector
this is a pic from my old car, but i'm using the same cable so looks the same on the new car

then it goes to a power/fuse box
30 amp fuse for JL Audio XD600/1
amp is installed in the OEM Sat module metal frame
and a 2A fuse for the green wire that powers the LC2i

LC2i next to OEM EPS amp (using Technics harness)

10 gauge speaker wire from Xd600/1 to an Andersson connector for sub quick removal, These connectors are used in UPSs and are heavy duty and can take up to 1/0 gauge cable
this way i can remove my sub if i need the trunk space with removing one connector

Sub is a JL Audio 13TW5-3 shallow 13.5" sub (mounting depth is only 2.5"!!)
this is installed in a custom made box firing through the ski hatch

here is the view from the trunk

the sub from inside the car with the seats folded
(notice the bungy cords holding the sub in place)

seats up

only thing left to do is to put some thick foam around the subwoofer so the sound doesn't resonate in the trunk but only fires through the ski hatch
just to prevent rattles inside the trunk etc

the sub is crossed over at 60hz 24db/octave
makes a world of difference to the OEM EPS system
the issue was never power, the EPS has plenty of that
but it was missing that lower bass that completes the picture

Very nicely done..clean install! Gotta hear it sometime. Would have been super tempted to do this if I didn't have the tiny e93 trunk.

i've seen an E92 install here or on E90post where the sub was mounted on a wooden baffle attached to the ski hatch
no box
just the sub firing through the ski hatch
basically you are using the trunk as the enclosure
you need a special sub that has a very stiff surround so it controls the woofer movement, which is what the air in my sealed enclosure does
prevents the woofer from extending too far out

you are welcome to check it out whenever you want

did you ever find someone to paint the trim?

Thanks, will take you up on it...although I'll probably just hear you driving down Lake Newport. I haven't had a chance to shop around trim painting quotes. I went by D&V and was quoted ridiculous price ($550) but pretty sure I can find much better.

hardest part to find believe it or not was the 2 amp fuse
all the ones you find are 10, 20, 30, 40 amps etc
nothing that small
and i wanted it in case anything happens to that wire and it touches the metal body
finally found it at Crutchfield

Great write up! Any reason you decided to go with the JL enclosure vs the MusicCar one?
I haven't heard either, so I have no bias - just curious

mainly cost
i have read great reviews about the Musicar one though
but it's a little above my budget
and i really wanted to use the JL thin 13.5" sub
i've never had a sub bigger than 10" so was curious
my box cost me $140 including shipping

Yeah the Musicar one definitely costs more although I really like it. Yours is nice and stealthy though which is definitely cool.

That's a hell of deal - totally get the cost aspect.

Looks really clean. How do you like the sound of the 13tw5? I'm considering one of those and just wondering if I'll regret not getting a W6.

the 13tw5 is a kick ass sub
it sounded great
but i sold that box because it was taking up too much space in the trunk
replaced it with this, using a 10W3V3-2 sub
sounds damn good

Nice! That looks good as well. Is that from Musicar? How's the sound difference now compared to your old setup? Just curious did you ever play your previous box towards the trunk and see the difference in sound? I have an e93 so i have virtually no trunk to begin with!

no
it's from a seller on ebay
much cheaper than the Musicar one
i love it
takes up very little trunk space
and sounds great
the bass is a little different with this one
hard to explain
but the bass seems to be more integrated into the main system than before

yes i did try rear facing, but not with the 13tw5
i bought a used rockford fosgate 10" sub in a small sealed enclosure
had that facing the rear of the car
sounds much better than the 13tw5 setup i had
what i had in mind for that setup was an infinit baffle type
so the sub is sealed against the rear seats
and fires through theski hatch
but i couldn't find anyone who could make that type of setup
i basically need a wooden board
shaped like the rear seat
covered in carpet, with the sub attached, firing through the ski hatch

you can do something similar on the E93
i believe i have seen a few installs that have that
search "subwoofer E93"

Kmarei - Thanks for the info, i just saw your response now....i forgot to subscribe to this thread. I took my ski pass hardware out of my trunk this weekend so i could get some measurements of what i could fit in firing through the ski pass, only can fit a 10" it looks like. I'm gonna build a custom box either way, whether firing thru the ski pass or back towards the trunk. Im just hung up on which way will sound better. Thru the ski pass would look cooler, but Im not sure it would sound as good. As you said, the 10" facing backward sounded better than the 13tw5 facing forward, although there was many differing factors....hmmm. Right now Im leaning towards a 10w6 facing towards the trunk with a custom box that utilizes the volume of the "tunnel" from the ski pass area, while it is a small amount of volume, I'll still gain about .25cf from it. If all things were equal, box volume, speaker type & size i wonder which would sound better...towards trunk or thru the ski pass?
