I do hate something about my M3.

has anybody here ever driven a 2009/2010 or 2011 Porsche GT3 or GT3 RS. Yes...that gearbox is awesome. I'd say they reached the point where it can't get better.

But it's nothing for daily driving. You have to really want to change the gears. Otherwise it won't work. Needs a lot of power.

My M3 6MT is definitely better for daily driving. And no - don't compare a GT3 or GT3 RS gearbox with the onces used within the normal 911 or 911S. Two worlds.

I'd be very interested in test driving a GT3 RS and a M3 6MT which has a short shift kit from Turner Motorsports or IND Distribution as especially Turner says it will not only affect the way between the gears but also make the shifting more accurate and precise.

Do have a 2009 Challenger SRT8 as my daily driver and everybody was impressed by the 6speed (Tremec TR6060). After I upgraded the stock shifter to a complete Hurst short shifter unit I couldn't hardly identify my car again. Was really worth every single dollar.

Not sure, but drove a turbo s convert today... slammed on bilsteins, with vossens wheels. The most insane acceleration i have ever experienced. That PDK transmission is just insane.

I have a S2000 and a M3. The shifter in the S2000 is by far one of the best if not the best ones out there. I've driven a GT3 and that one is pretty good too. Clutch engagement is another thing. I hate the non-linear engagement on the M3. I figured out how to get a smooth engagement on my old E46 330ZHP and E46M3 but can't quite get it perfect on my current M3.

I have a S2000 (AP1) and M3 6MT as well, and there's no comparison. I curse the M3's shifter each time I get into the S2K. For a more linear clutch engagement, try the clutch stop (the one everyone gets off of ebay), and removing the second spring. It worked well, and it's now more linear feeling.

Glad someone started this thread. I add all the quotes here - everything is on point. I had a 997S and the M3 tranny isn't remotely close. It IS really disappointing. "Only running well hot" - it does make sense, but that S can run fine around town AND on the track. The tranny does take quite a bit away from my enjoyment as well - it does everything else so well.
Couple points to add to the thread:

If you think the tranny is good - I challenge anyone to test drive a 2011 Audi S4. Amazing as it sounds, everything is better. Better shift throw, better clutch pedal action, better engagement. Hard to believe, but true. Almost bought one of them.

I've read that some people have complained enough to have the complete tranny replaced. Anyone add any experiences here? I get the feeling if they really did that, 2 weeks later I'd still have the same thing! However, those forum reports suggested that the replaced tranny was MUCH better. After 4k miles, it IS getting better and I drove several used ('09 and '08) cars that were worse after more miles.

Mine seems to be very smooth. Each gear clicks into the gates without the grind/notchiness but with smoothness.
I think it depends on the driver a bit in how you release the clutch in coordination of pressing the gas pedal.

However, I did remove my clutch spring and made a world of a difference as I do feel where my engagement is

Question for you guys, does the E92 M3 with 6MT have a CDV (clutch delay valve) like the E46s. My 330Ci has the CDV and most fanatics remove it for smoother shifting. A smooth 1st gear roll off is tricky because of it. I still have my CDV but my left foot has more or less gotten used to being extra sensitive. So, does the E92 M3 have it and can it be removed?

I have no idea what you folks are bitching about. Maybe I got a good one, or maybe it's because I always let the car warm up enough for the revs to settle down, but I think the clutch and gearbox work perfectly.

I have more of a problem with the drive-line play than the clutch. Klunks and drive-line snatch really annoy me. I agree the clutch engagement is a little vague, but I think that is due to it being a dual plate unit. I had an M5 clutch in my e46 M3 and that thing was wonderful.

No CDV in these cars.
Yes, there is the "smooth" technique and even using three fingers to shift. That DOES work SOME of the time. Don't want to date myself, but I've driven manuals for a long time and have never had issues shifting - double clutch downshifting and all. I test drove 3 manual M3's before ordering mine as I hoped this was just an issue with older cars. I would say that the used cars I drove were worse, but none of them were even close to "smooth". If you have a smooth tranny, I think you should count yourself as lucky.

My last two cars had the worst two manual transmissions made for such high horsepower cars, the CTS-V and the Shelby GT500. I couldn't be happier with the 6MT on the E92.
