X pipe install on ramps possible?

For anyone who's installed HFC's and an x pipe, is it possible to do this just by putting the front wheels on ramps, or am I going to have to go with jack stands?

Depends on the size of the ramps.

If that's the case, then you shouldn't have an issue.

It can be done (I've done it a few times) but it's a colossal bitch! I'm 6' and 180 and I barely had room to slide under there. You have to work with your hands over your head (tiring) because there isn't enough room to work above your body. The x-pipe is heavy so it's difficult to maneuver it in and out while laying on your back with so little space. If you're lowered, it's even worse. At the very least, I would put the rear of the car on stands.

Take it to a shop and pay the hundred bucks. I tried swapping out just the hfc part (I have the active pipe) and it took way to long and is very difficult to work on your back. I'm assuming you have rhino ramps and the actual lift is only a little over 6 inches. If you still try, save yourself a day and get a friend to pass you tools. Getting in and out is a bitch! Quick tip: don't tighten anything until everything is in place and save the header tightening for last and do the part attached to the catback first. Happy DIYing!!

I've done 2 rear sections on ramps....never attempted an X-pipe though.

Just drive up the ramp, jack up the car by the diff and put it on jack stands. Should be doable...pain in the ass though.

Isn't the rear section shorter than the xpipe? And easier?

Yes. The x-pipe is long. With just the front elevated, the two connections at the rear exhaust will be more difficult to get to. It can be done, but like others have said, it will be less comfortable and take longer. Even a couple more inches would help. Maybe you could take a jack, jack one rear side, slip a plank under the wheel, lower off the jack and then do the same on the other.

Well, I've got Race Ramps, so the height is actually 8". My brother is helping me out and we do have jackstands, so I think we can manage between the two of us. An extra set of hands definitely helps out with this kind of stuff.

Thanks for the tips, man. How do you like the sound of the AA with the HFC's and x pipe? I've got an AA rear that I'm pairing up with a Challenge Sport cats and pipe. Any noticeable drone at cruising speeds? How would you compare the sound to just the rear section? I fully expect it to be very loud and boomy at low RPM's and around town.

I think the front could be ok, but the rear connections will be a pain without being lifted. It is also more time consuming and laborious as you will have to remove o2 sensors, and maybe front felt pieces and skid plate to access the header bolts. I recentley did mine and it was a major PITA even on 6 ton snap-on jack stands because a creeper wouldn' fit. I was alone though.

I don't use a creeper when there is limited clearance. Cardboard on the floor. Front felt can stay and the very front skidplate bolts can stay. 3 ton jackstands work fine. 6 ton would be luxurious.

I loved my AA HFC/catback! great sounding and nice and loud. Nice tones imo, and no rasp (at least from what I can tell). I changed it to just pure straight pipe and I love it even more. There is less drone in the cabin (except with the windows down) and slightly deeper tone. Better throttle response too. There is definitely a little drone with the HFC, but I love the sound, drone and all.

Agreed cardboard would have been best, but I didn't have any around and hadn't planned on getting it. I just layed on the ground and then walked around with what appeared to be a large skin rash on my left arm/shoulder for a few days. I only use 6 ton because I'm very paranoid about being crushed, I've heard horror stories of even craftsman 3 tons failing. One in particular because the lip snapped that comes in contact with the jacking point. The actual arm didn't break, but the car still slipped off as a result.

I had my share of bruised shoulders and other body parts, but have the ultimate in luxury now. Unfortunately, I did not get it installed until after my x-pipe work, though.

Never get underneath your car with just ramps! ramps and a set of jack stands plus your hydrolic jack underneath the front engine mount. safety first!
