One thing I didn't see called out here, is there is supposed to be some sealant applied where the cam cover meets the cylinder head, on both sides.

Yep, the Drei Bond, mentioned in OPs BOM.

I believe you are correct. Thanks for the write up OP. Is it really necessary to change the timing cover gaskets? I've had the parts for about a year now and finally going to tackle the job. On previous DIYs there was no mention of these gaskets.

I did because it was super cheap and I was there anyway

You might be right, I have a set at home but currently out of town. Let me check but thanks for the heads up!

If you replace that gasket it is already applied from factory. If not Drei Bond will also work

Believe it is on the metal gasket for the timing cover, but does the valve gasket have sealing on? (preparing for the job)

You are correct nothing on the gasket. I only used Drei Bond in the valve cover rails to fill in any pitting from removing the factory coating

Seems OEM usage is in the corners towards the timing cover only. Any feeling for whether more extensive usage of Drei bond around the rail (in order to seal + keep gasket in place) will make it tricky to loose the day its time to lift the valve cover again?

Thanks

I only applied Drei bond inside the rails like pictured in the DIY. Once the gasket was pressed in, none escaped around the gasket. I don't feel it will create an issue later if I had to remove the covers for what ever reason. The gasket will be pretty easy to remove and just a cleaning/scraping to remove leftover Drei bond in the rail would be simple enough. Being powder coated the covers will last much longer than the stock epoxy coated covers. I guess only time will tell.

As for the timing gasket, once squeezed it pushes its sealant up in that area circled above. It mates with the gasket. No need to apply anything if you are changing your timing gasket

Ah, didn't realize the timing gaskets seal was squeezed up, ordered some drei bond but will probably come handy anyway.

Thanks

Hey guys, having trouble sourcing the last couple of plug tubes. Read about a bloke who simply replaced the o-rings instead, better availability (+ $5 per tube vs $25).
Searching aorund ut can't find any confirmation on the size. BMW sell separate o-rings for their smaller engines but obviously decided that M3 owners can afford buying the whole thing.

Anyone with insight on the S65 o-rings?

The seals per BMW's TIS manual can be reused but only if the rubber around the edges haven't been compromised.

This is a 50/50 shot, but I think this is the o-ring size around the tubes:

Thanks mate, I haven no access to TIS anylonger so good to know. Specially as I'm missing two tubes, reuse may be an option.

The link btw seems to point at the o-rings for the thermostat pipes, but thanks anyway.

No problem!

I know they are, but they really might be the same size as the ones on the tube. Only one way to find out haha

My bad - I just realize that the sealing on the S65 tube in fact isn't a loose o-ring but a glued sealing. So new pipes needed.

Getting ready for the job. Going to order parts soon. Mine are leaking but not super terribly. Also I’m wondering if it’s ok to go for the cheaper victor reinz gasket along with the Elrin timing cover gasket just to save a few bucks
So parts needed will be
1 Drei Bond 07589062376
1 Engine Valve Cover Gasket BMW-11127838271
1 Engine Valve Cover Gasket BMW-11127838272
8 Spark Plug Tube BMW-11127835170
24 Valve Cover Bolt 11127841217
2 valve cover bolts 11127841218
4 Cam Sensor seal 13627796699
4 Cam Sensor bolt 11417526315 - are these really necessary?
2 each Crank Case Vent Seal 11157838370
2 oil separator seal BMW-11157838369
2 Engine Timing Cover Gasket BMW-11127838162

I searched a couple resellers. Seems FCP Euro would be the way to go since they offer lifetime warranty and their prices are not far off from the competitors

FCP Euro:
11127838271, 11127838272, 11127835170 - $318.30
11127841217 - $8.99x24 $215.75
11127841218 - $9.59x2 $19.18
13627796699 - $3.29x4 $13.16
11157838369 - $6.89x2 $13.78
11157838370 - $5.69x2 $11.38
11127838162 - $18.19x2 $36.38
07589062376 - $25.69

Total: $653.63

Getbmwparts
11127838271 - $47.85
11127838272 - $47.85
11127835170 - $22.47EA x8 $179.76
11127841217 - $7.97EA x 24 $191.28
11127841218 - $8.44EA x 2 $16.88
13627796699 - $2.42EA x4 $9.68
11157838370 - $5.01EA x2 $10.02
11157838369 - $6.15 x2 $12.30
11127838162 - $15.91 x2 $31.82
07589062376 - $23.05

Total $570.49

ECSTuning
11127838271 - $48.42
11127838272 - $51.95
11127835170 - $22.80 x8 $182.40
11127841217 - $9.20 x24 $220.80
11127841218 - $10.18 x2 $20.36
