Also note that the reign of the S65 was in the 3.0-4.0L category, not the overall. BMW last won the overall category with the N54 (a forced induction motor). The S65 never won the overall; that award went to the S85 back in 2006 and 2006. I'm not trying to discredit the S65. I just think people often overlook the fact that there are many categories. My assessment is that the journalists use the different categories to issue awards to engines that represent different aspects of an engine's character. It's a way for them to communicate what is important to them in each of the respective character aspects: economy, specific output, forced induction, naturally aspirated, etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interna...ne_of_the_Year I would say Ward doesn't discriminate and assesses the engines on the innovative or technical design... Since 1999, the 1.8 to 2.0L category has been consistently a turbo, aside from the S2000 engine. Heck, I owned two motors on this list, the S65B40 and the M57TUD30, and the M57 is a turbo diesel.

M57 is a pretty sweet engine, better than the S65 IMO, they should have put it in the M3....
What ever happened to the performance Audi diesel that was suppose to get technology transfer from the R10 race car? http://www.fourtitude.com/news/publi...cle_3828.shtml http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_R10_TDI

you can use your M57 to pull your S54, but if you use your S54 to pull your M57, you might throw a RB through your firewall

My favorite line "usability and fuel-efficiency is truly unique"
Fuel-effeciency must be a VERY relative term, hahahah Im averaging 12-13mpg for the last 5 months |

Great engine. But are there all that many engines in the 3-4l spectrum worth buying? Virtually all V8s are over 4 liter these days even with forced induction and the 3-4l engines are typically unremarkable. I'm talking about those odd 3.x liter NA V6 engines that liter the Japanese cars that just flat out suck.
I'm gunna just say it but if the M3 tipped over into 4,001 cc, it may have picked up far fewer awards in the above 4 category. Even with the S54 BMW dominated the 3-4l space because back then their competition was even more pitiful. I'm shocked that McLaren didn't start picking up awards in the category earlier on with their 3.8 l turbo. Anyhow, this motor is simply epic to drive and it will be tough driving a car with less response if I don't move on the a GT3 or something else with a powertrain with similar characteristics. |

All this talk of ultimate engines has me craving a V12 (again). Just one before I die. A bucket list thing. Anyone else have that? There are a couple here local to me (Murcielago and F12) and the sound of them is heavenly. Sigh.
