New to Photography: My Rebel XSi

Hey folks, I just recently got my Rebel XSi, have had it for a week now.

These pictures in my album were taken using my kit lens, some of the up close pictures had a wide angle attachment lens with macro.

Please give me some C&C on my photos, any advice is always welcome. I do know that I should probably crop some of these photos, edit them, etc.

Here's the link to my album:

Thanks.

Thanks. Anyone have any suggestions on a new lens? I was thinking of the 50mm f/1.8 because it's cheap and pretty nifty. Any other options?

I'm in the market for a new XSi as well, and I plan on getting that same 50mm lens. Decent range (once you figure the 1.6x modifier) and it's quick.

I'm stuck trying to find a decent walk-around lens that doesn't break the bank... Any suggestions?

Given your subject matter you probably would enjoy a wide aperture prime of some sort to better isolate your subject from the background. That said, I see a few cases (walnuts, some of the flowers) where it looks like your focus is a bit off. Shooting wide open can give some neat effects, but it makes it even more incumbent upon you to take care to define your plane of focus properly.

Enjoy your XSi. I have one too.

Well I don't know anything about lenses really, but I do know that I saved quite a bit of cash on my XSi using www.live.com. I have not received my 25% cash back as of yet, you have to wait 60 days so they know you will not return your item.

But it was a great kit: XSi, Kit Lens, 3 Filters, Wide Angle attachment, lens cleaning kit, 8gb SD card, carry case, and tripod. I spent $838 and then after rebate price was $628 or so. Really an unbeatable deal.

Cool thank you for pointing these things out to me. I have not figured out how to use the focusing squares, not sure what they are really called. And I have also not figured out how to use the light meter as of yet.

In Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson he always talks about using his spot meter to get a light reading off of someone's face, etc. I'm reading David Busch's Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/450D Guide to Digital SLR Photography - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1598635786 right now, so hopefully I will get my answers and figure out how to do these things soon.

Awesome, Doug, thanks for that info, I just ordered the Xsi through Live.com...

Mach -- If you are buying, I recommend doing it today! Circuit City has it on sale for $699.99 but Live.com says $799.99. So I bought from CC through the link anyway because theirs is a "6% to 10% discount" which would bring it below the lower advertised prices on there. And CC is an authorized canon seller. If not for this Live.com thing, I'd just buy from Amazon.com - tax free and free shipping.
