I probably wont notice if my car is burning any oil when I pick it up in Sept. Going to be changing my oil every 3500-4k miles. Don't ask, I have major OCD when it comes to cars I love.

These threads pop up from time to time. I find it very unusual for a car to use the amount of oil some of you are experiencing.

My car has 17k miles on it. I have not had to add a drop. Compare that to what you guys are experiencing and WTF???

13800 Km No Oil - I Think Cars That Are Drinking Oil Needs To Be Checked Up. Does Not Sound Normal To Me.

Thanks.. I have almost 25K on mine and not a drop that needed to be added. I change my oil every 7500 miles but I don't baby my M at all. Redline it 2-3 times/ day and keep it 3500-6500 most of the time. I thought my car isn't normal

Yes it is apparently normal that some do and some don't, but it makes no sense for motors that are made to the exact same specs at the exact same factory to differ so much. I would like to hear a better explanation from somebody within BMW engineering.

'3-5k is over doing it... plus that would cost me a whopping close to 500 within 15k miles.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I just hit 1500 miles on my 2011, and am bringing it in for the 1200 mile service tomorrow; just haven't had a chance to get to the dealer. But, after about 1100 miles the computer alerted me that I was at the minimum oil level (need to add 1qt). Today it alerted me that it's BELOW minimum level and continued driving may cause damage.

Based on this thread this seems like a somewhat excessive amount of oil used for the mileage. J08M3 did you observe any particular problem that would cause your oil usage?

In defense of newer M3s, my 2011 has not burned a drop in 8,000km and two track weekends.

Once again check around your cap for drip lines. There is another tread on how the cap doesn't always seal.

I lost a liter in 500 miles til I replaced the cap and it has been steady as a rock for the last 6000 miles with out losing a drop.

My 2011 burns more than my 08 did.

Mine drank one notch of oil (digital reading) while it was being broken in. After that the readings are solid. I'm at 18k.

Mine drank a quart in 3,500. Seems to have slowed down now.

After getting it changed at the dealer last week, it was just under the max line. The next morning I noticed the level had dropped noticably, but still much above the midway mark. It seems to have stayed steady at that level ever since. Is this normal??

Crappy oil sensor means that it takes up to 100 miles for the display on the dash to speak the truth. Only way to stay safe is to periodically monitor so that you know your rate of oild consumption. I added .4L when I was down 1/2 and it took 80 miles and 10-15 on-demand display refreshes to show the change.
