Audi S5...0-60 in 4.5 sec's!

Motor Trend just tested their S5 on a track and got a 4.5sec/13.1 qtr. mile.

That is right there with the RS4! .......

My question is..............how can this be?

It has @354 HP.......... the RS4 has 414HP.............

It has only 14 more HP than my S4 and I get 5.2-5.4 all day long....

So.......either Motor Trend has a serious drug problem, or.......

maybe the S5, like the 335i puts out more HP than advertised........

Thoughts?

my main thought is that if the handling is anything like the older S4's I would have no interest in them

I test drove an S4 (with V8) back when my DD was an E36 M3 and really didn't think much of it

+1. Yep, in the video they say "just over 5 seconds." Where did you (MI6) get 4.5?

In the video, they also "it's still not quite the ultimate driving machine like BMW's 335i..." but they did claim the RS5 would be V10 powered, which would make the car even heavier.

Sorry guys, the S5 DID hit 60 in 4.5 seconds. However, MotorTrend's testing methods were questionable...

Wow, it seems like it pulled exactly 1.0 g during the acceleration test. That's remarkable. Thanks for the info!

Unfortunately the time does not stand as they were completely screwed for a second run in the opposite direction.

Those numbers are always off. As an S4 owner, there’s no way the S5 will go that quick.

How much lighter is the S5 over the RS4?

The S5 received 3.5 stars (out of 5) in EVO issue 105. Excerpts from the article:

"And there is no denying the deep reserves of grip or the S5's fluent way of stringing together combinations of bends. Yet the process isn't nearly as involving as it is uniformly competent."

"The rewards for a press-on approach are measured out in ground covered for time elapsed rather than smiles per mile."

"It's hard to get it wrong in the S5, but rare to feel anything other than detached from the action."

"RS5 has to do better than this"

Engine doesnt like heavy braking though. Flooded soon afterwards and wouldnt re start. We can wave goodbye to that one. Maybe if they had just coasted instead of accelarating? It was never going to Surfive.

OMG I crack myself up.

Now that would have made the S5 truly "edgy" and "sharp".

Thanks Leg and xraymd for all the Audi insights! Audi would better start monitoring this thread for advice on how they can post better performance numbers in magazines for the S5. It's even graphically illustrated!

Wait, I just got word that Motortrend repeated the same test with the M3 and got the same numbers, and concluded that it is just as fast.

Motor trend eventually gave the edge to the M3,however, after it proved to be more aerodynamic with a flight distance tripling that of the audi.

BMW has a new program for that M3.....

It's called "Efficient Aerodynamics"..........
