Thumbs up BMW unveils E92 M3 GT2 ALMS race car - 485hp | 500nm | 1150kg !!

BMW is re-entering the ALMS (American Le Mans Series racing) with this race-prepped e92 M3 coupe

It comes complete with large rear spoiler, wider wheel fenders, a stripped interior and an upgraded 485 horsepower engine.

Race team owner Bobby Rahal was on hand to help announce BMW's return to ALMS racing, which will take place for the 2009 racing season. Rahal has previously campaigned BMW racing cars in ALMS.

Quote:
"We are very pleased to be returning to the American Le Mans Series with our latest generation BMW M3" states Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO, BMW of North America.

"Sports car racing has been part of BMW of North America's history practically from day one. Just two weeks after the company was incorporated in March 1975, a BMW CSL won the Twelve Hours of Sebring. We are confident that the fourth generation M3 will continue the legacy of its two predecessors which combined to win six manufacturer's championships over nine seasons in US sports car racing. As it has been in the past we believe the ALMS is the ideal venue to showcase the potential of the newest BMW M3."
BMW North America withdrew from the ALMS at the end of 2006, and the marque's return coincides with the ALMS' 10th season.

BMW won the first race in series history when J.J. Lehto, Tom Kristensen and Jorg Muller drove a BMW V12 LMR to victory lane in the 1999 12 Hours of Sebring. That same year, BMW became the first ALMS team to win the overall championship at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. BMW has 15 ALMS wins, with nine in GT2 class and six in LMP1.

Wow! This beast has clearly been in development for a while, like since 2006? :-) Does anybody know the real story behind this? Why did PTG decide not to wait it out until this car was ready? Did Rahal/Letterman ink this deal a long time ago? Rahal is one of the sharpest business guys in motorsport - this has the makings of an awesome team!
