Too much droneee

Hey everyone. I currently have a gintani x pipe with the high flow cats combined with gintani hybrid mufflers. The sounds is very loud and amazing but my patience for the drone has run out. Anyone have advice on what a feasible solution would be? Ive done research and there doesnt seem to be agreement on whether to change the mufflers or the x pipe. I was thinking about changing the x pipe to something you guys would recommend that would reduce the drone. However i do want it to still remain loud and i dont want to go back to stock mid sections.
any advice is appreciated.
thanks.

lower drone and sound i general = muffler

lower rasp and some drone = resonator

My suggestion = add 2 vibrant resonators

Drone may almost completely go away over time. It took 500-700 miles for my Akra slip-ons with catless xpipes set-up to adjust.

In my case the drone was coming from the mufflers. Tried to change x-pipes - no change to the drone AT ALL.

I'm in the same boat and am thinking of doing some sound deadening in the car. Keeps sounds out as well as making the Audio better in your car. Just leave your exhaust alone if you like how it sounds.

i've had the gintani race mufflers with oem xpipe still got drone..
i think the mufflers are the reason for your drone because it seems like their mufflers are basically straight through.

Why would you get a Gintani if you don't want a loud exhaust?
What's a hybrid muffler?

If you really want to get rid of the drone, have a shop weld on two Heimholtz chambers like what AA has. It'll work a lot better than adding some resonators.

It's essentially their Race mufflers with the Sport packing inside. It's supposed to be middle of the road as far as sound goes between the Sport & Race.

I would try to add a pair of resonators to the x pipe, shouldnt cost more than a couple hundred bucks and it worked for me!

Gintani exhaust is loud, I know you don't want to go back to the stock mid section but I feel it works and there is no loss in power, you will always experience drone from most if not all aftermarket exhaust setup in my opinion, especially at certain rpm. good luck

switch out the muffler...xpipe will give more volume and rasp. try installing your stock muffler and see if it still drones.

Will be very raspy with stock muffler.

I still think that the sound deadening idea is the way to go. Same great sounding new exhaust, but you don't hear it when the windows are up.

You will need a different set of mufflers to reduce or eliminate drone.

Alternatively go for a valve based exhaust setup which gives you the best of both worlds.

Make sure to size the resonators correctly.. my buddy has three resonators on his car with a catless/mufflerless setup and his drones more than my setup which is just one large resonator. Both turbo'd E46 M3's.. so simply adding more resonators isn't always ideal.

But if the individual above said it worked for him ask him what brand/size resonator he used and replicate it.

Dinan and Borla are both conservative. Both used four resonators, two before the x and two after the x. I have never read complaints about either system, but regularly read complaints about some of the others.

You can try adding a helmholtz type chamber to your exhaust system. Basically T-Off a pipe from the main exhaust tubing add a resonator to it and seal it off. From my experience this should eliminate all drone. I doubt it will do anything to exhaust flow but since I have no dyno experience with this I am not sure. Here is a crude drawing to show what I mean.

BMW uses hemholtz chambers on some of its exhausts and some of its intakes. AA uses them on some of its exhausts, as do other tuners.

Exact reason why I will stay away from aftermarket exhausts for the m3

Besides costing a shit load of money and droning..the OEM exhaust mod is the best bang for the buck and will sound perfect for a street driven M3

I've had experience with adding resonators vs. Heimholz chambers and the chamber do a MUCH BETTER job with drone. You just need to have the space to add them on.
