I was getting a sedan. The M3 was the sedan I liked best.

E90 is also probably cheaper to produce because the production volume of the E90 chassis is about 10x that of the E92. Economy of scale applies to everything shared between the E90 M3 and the regular E90 sedans, which are ubiquitous. So roofs, doors, trunk lids, taillights, most of the unibody, etc. are all produced in a much larger volume than the equivalent E92 parts. I don't think the carbon roof is the reason the base prices are so much higher, even though the moonroof is a no-cost option on the E92. The non-M E90/E92 have about the same price difference.

Oops. I bought an E93 M3. one week later I get the "news". Few months later it's sold and now an E90.

No regrets. Much easier to get the big ass infant carrier in and out. trunk holds the big stroller. E90 feels a lot lighter.

Only time I would miss the E93 is when I'm on a winding road in sunny 75 degree weather and driving by myself. oh wait that will never happen again. never mind

I prefer the look of the E90 over the E92 from the rear quater-panel back. It just looks more aggressive in my opinion.

I originally was planning on ordering a coupe but after test driving both the sedan just seemed so much more practical. Cosmetically I initially though the coupe was better but after seeing both in person the sedan looked just as good to me and having the larger backseats and four doors is just more convenient for me.

If you look at the 2008 production volume, the sedan production is about 2.5times the couple production. The economies of scale do apply of course but the marketing and perceived market value play a bigger role is pricing of cars. Coupes are "sportier" and command a greater value than "family" sedans.

2008 Production numbers:

2008 total 474208
e90 246231
e91 93191
e92 79248
e93 55538

sedans: 339422 72%
coupes: 134786 28%

i like the look of almost all 4 doors better than their 2 door counterpart. i think it has a more grown up look(cant believe im saying that). in the m3 case i think it has a more aggressive look while being subtle also if that makes any sense. its less of a kid toy maybe. i bought the last generation e46 330i zhp instead of a m3 for the very reason that it didnt have 4 doors.

Where do you find production numbers like those? I never have any luck finding stuff like that.

Actually, this makes sense. The non-M3 E90/E92 has a $2000 MSRP difference. The M3 E90/E92 has a $3050 difference. The moonroof MSRP on the E90 is $1050, which is the exact difference if you opted for the E92 with a moonroof instead of the carbon fiber. So production volume + moonroof/carbon fiber accounts for the difference spot on.

I think they are equally beautiful. I'm currently ordering an E90.

I didn't see anyone else mention my reason. For me, it was obvious that the e90 is a better deal. The e90 base price is $55,400 vs $58,400. That works out to $13,850 per door as opposed to a whopping $29,200 per door! Less than half of the price for each door in the e90.

But yeah, I like the look better, and the convenience of a sedan. So much easier to toss something small on the back seat in a sedan, and no acrobatics required for the occasional passenger to get in.

I love the look 0f the E90 more than the E92. Also when test driving both I felt that the E90 was more planted. Also it is a DD so it would be a pita to have to get out every time to let a person out.

Prior to getting my sedan, I actually preferred the looks of the coupe. The CF roof was so hot, I really wanted one. However, the wifey recommended the sedan. I want to keep my car for a while and I expect I will have kids some time during the lifetime of my M3, so the sedan made a lot of sense.

Now that I have the car, I actually prefer the sedan over the coupe. The looks have grown on me and I think it looks more mature than the coupe. One other big positive on the sedan is that the door windows have frames. The frameless windows on the coupe are a wear item and they seem to let more wind noise in. Also, if you leave your car out in the ice, then sometimes the frameless windows get iced to the point where you cant open/close the doors. I don't know if this happens on the M3s though.

I bought the sedan because there is no point having rear seats without rear doors. If I didn't want rear doors, I would have bought (another) roadster or 2-seat coupe.

Anyone else nervous about picking up their M3 now?

Hopefully this only happens to those who buy e93s?
